Marmaris Bay and Harbour

Marmaris sits in a deep natural harbour ringed by pine-covered mountains, where the Aegean meets the Mediterranean. The old town climbs the hill below Marmaris Castle, and the long marina and harbour front are lined with wooden boats waiting for the day's trips. The bay's sheltered shape keeps the sea calm on most days, which is ideal for learning to dive.

The dive boat sails out from the harbour towards the rocky headlands and islands at the mouth of the bay, where the water becomes deeper and clearer. If you are wondering how to get to the dive boat, on the standard option you do not need to: we collect you from your hotel in Marmaris and take you back after the trip.

Training and Your First Dive

Once on board, the instructor explains everything step by step: how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise your ears, the hand signals used underwater and how the buoyancy jacket works. You then put on the wetsuit, mask, fins and tank and practise at the surface until you feel comfortable, with no rush.

Beginners dive at a shallow depth chosen by the instructor, holding on or staying side by side for around 20 to 30 minutes. Is scuba diving in Marmaris worth it for a first-timer? Yes: the water is clear, the boat is calm, and the training is designed so that people who have never dived before can enjoy the experience safely.

The Underwater World off Marmaris

The sea floor around Marmaris is a mix of rocky reefs, sand patches and seagrass meadows. Look for bream, groupers, wrasse, damselfish and small schools of silver fish, as well as octopus, sea urchins, starfish and colourful sponges hiding among the rocks. Visibility is usually good in summer, with sunlight reaching far down the reef.

The two dives are at different spots, so you see a second landscape after lunch. Certified divers go a little deeper with the guide. The best time for scuba diving in Marmaris is from May to October, when the water is warm; the sea is often at its warmest in August and September, and mornings tend to be calmest.

Lunch on Board and the Return

Between the two dives the boat moves to the second spot and lunch is served on board. The surface break is part of safe diving, and it is a pleasant moment to sunbathe, swim near the boat and share what you saw with the crew. Drinks are sold on board and are not included.

After the second dive the boat heads back to the harbour, usually in the afternoon, and our driver brings you back to your hotel, with time to rest before an evening by the marina. The whole trip takes about six hours. A DVD of your dives is offered on board and can be bought separately if you would like to take the memory home.
