The Dalyan mud baths sit where warm, sulphurous springs rise on the edge of the lake and river system. Visitors step into a pool of soft grey mud, cover themselves from head to toe and let it dry in the sun before rinsing off under the showers. Köyceğiz Lake and the Dalyan River by boat

The Dalyan River links Köyceğiz Lake with the Mediterranean, winding through a protected delta of tall reeds, lagoons and narrow channels. Travelling by river boat is the only practical way to explore it, and the cruise is a highlight in itself: herons and kingfishers fly over the water, fishermen check their traps, and the famous blue crabs of the delta are often seen near the banks.

The boats glide slowly, so you can sit back and enjoy the green mountains that surround the lake and the calm reflections on the water. The Kaunos rock tombs

Rising above the river on a sheer cliff face are the rock tombs of Kaunos, carved in the fourth century BC for the rulers and wealthy families of this ancient harbour city. Their temple-like facades, with columns, pediments and carved doorways, are one of the most photographed sights on the Turkish coast, and they look especially dramatic from the deck of a boat.

Kaunos was an important trading city on the border between ancient Caria and Lycia, and its ruins, including a theatre and city walls, lie on the opposite bank. İztuzu Turtle Beach

At the end of the river the boat reaches İztuzu Beach, a long, golden sandbar separating the delta from the open sea. On one side the river water is calm and fresh, on the other the Mediterranean waves roll in, so you can swim in both. The beach is a protected nesting site of the loggerhead sea turtle, and you may spot turtles swimming near the river mouth.

From May to September the turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs, which is why the beach is closed after dark and parts of it are marked off with wooden stakes.
