Pamukkale, the Cotton Castle

Seen from the road, Pamukkale looks like a snow-covered cliff rising above the green plain near Denizli. The white comes from travertine: calcium-rich thermal water flows from the springs at the top, spreads across the slope and leaves layers of mineral that harden into terraces, basins and frozen-looking cascades. Together with Hierapolis, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.

Shoes are not allowed on the terraces, so you walk barefoot along the official path, feeling the warm water and the ridged surface underfoot. Pamukkale is about three and a half hours by road from Marmaris, which makes a guided day trip the easiest way to visit. The bus leaves early, stopping for about thirty minutes in Denizli for breakfast and a rest, and arrives in time to see the site before the midday heat. After the visit, lunch is served at a modern local restaurant, usually a cold starter, a main course, dessert and fruit.

Pamukkale opening hours run from early morning to evening, longer in summer, and entry tickets are paid on site in the default option. The best time to visit Pamukkale is April to June and September to October, when the air is mild. In midsummer the white surface reflects strong sunlight, so sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen are essential.
