Full Description
Göreme Open-Air Museum: Rock-Cut Churches and Frescoes
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is the heart of the UNESCO-listed Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia. Between the 10th and 12th centuries, monks carved churches, chapels, refectories and living cells into the soft tuff cliffs of this small valley. Inside the Apple Church, the Snake Church and the Church of Saint Barbara you see saints and Gospel scenes painted on the rock, and the separately ticketed Dark Church keeps some of the brightest colours in Anatolia because so little daylight ever reached its walls.
On this Göreme Open-Air Museum tour your guide explains how to read the paintings, from simple red-ochre crosses drawn straight onto the stone to full cycles of frescoes, then leaves free time to explore; plan about an hour. The museum opens daily from morning until early evening, with shorter hours in winter. Tickets are bought at the gate on the day, and the richly painted Tokalı Church just below the entrance is normally covered by the same ticket.
Özkonak Underground City
Özkonak lies beneath the village of the same name, about 15 km north of Avanos. Unlike the underground cities of the south, which were dug straight down into a plain, Özkonak was carved into the slope of a volcanic hill, and it was rediscovered only in 1972 when a villager followed water that kept vanishing into the ground. Long tunnels link storerooms, stables, a small chapel and kitchens with blackened ceilings, and narrow holes drilled between the levels let people talk from one floor to the next.
The most striking details are the round millstone doors that could be rolled across a passage from the inside, and the small openings above them used to defend the entrances. Four levels are open to visitors. The Özkonak Underground City visit takes about an hour with your guide; it is quieter than the bigger underground cities, but passages are low and narrow in places, so it is not ideal for anyone uneasy in tight spaces. Tickets are paid at the entrance.
Uçhisar Castle Panorama
Uçhisar Castle is a huge rock pinnacle honeycombed with rooms and tunnels that towers over the village of Uçhisar, the highest point in the Göreme area. For centuries it served as a natural fortress and lookout over the trade routes below, and its cliffs are still pocked with dovecotes that farmers carved to collect pigeon droppings as fertiliser for their orchards and fields.
On the Red Tour the stop at Uçhisar lasts about 20 minutes, enough for the sweeping view over Pigeon Valley, the fairy chimneys of Göreme and, on clear days, the snowy cone of Mount Erciyes far to the east. Is Uçhisar Castle worth visiting? Even from the viewpoint at its foot it gives one of the finest panoramas in Cappadocia, and climbing to the summit needs extra time and a separate ticket, so this stop gives you the views without the steep steps. Late afternoon light turns the valleys gold, while mornings are clearer for distant views.
Devrent Valley, the Valley of Imagination
Devrent Valley, also called Imagination Valley or Pink Valley, lies on the road between Ürgüp and Avanos. It has no cave churches or dwellings, which sets it apart from most valleys in Cappadocia. Instead it is a field of soft pink and cream tuff cones, shaped by wind and rain into forms that look like animals and figures. The cones were born when ash from ancient volcanoes settled and hardened, and harder caps of rock protected the softer columns beneath as the land around them wore away.
The most famous shape is the camel rock beside the road, but walking among the formations you will also spot a seal, a dolphin and pairs of kissing birds, depending on your imagination; your guide points out the favourites. We spend about 20 minutes here for photos and a short stroll. The valley is open all day without a ticket, and its pastel colours look best in the softer light of the afternoon.
Love Valley Viewpoint
Love Valley lies just north of Göreme, between the village and Çavuşin. Its fame comes from the tallest and slenderest fairy chimneys in the region: smooth columns, some higher than 30 metres, each crowned by a darker cap of harder rock that shielded the soft tuff from erosion. Orchards, poplars and small vegetable plots fill the valley floor between them.
The Love Valley viewpoint gives the classic postcard view down the length of the valley, and on calm mornings it fills with hot-air balloons drifting overhead. On this tour we stop for about 20 minutes for photos and a short walk along the rim, where the paths are easy and the views open in every direction. The best time to visit Love Valley for photos is early morning or late afternoon, when low sun brings out the texture of the rock; at midday in summer, a hat and water are welcome.
Avanos: Pottery Town on the Red River
Avanos sits on the banks of the Kızılırmak, the Red River, the longest river that flows entirely within Turkey. Its red clay has fed a pottery tradition since Hittite times, and many workshops in the old town still use kick wheels turned by foot. During the workshop visit a master potter shapes a jug or vase in a few minutes, and volunteers can sit at the wheel and try it themselves.
Avanos is also the lunch stop of the day: the default option includes an open-buffet lunch at a local restaurant, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. Afterwards you have free time to walk the riverside promenade and the cobbled lanes of the old quarter. A carpet-weaving demonstration may be offered as an optional stop where you can see how knots are tied and natural dyes are made; there is never any obligation to buy at the workshops.

About 7.5 hours from hotel pickup to drop-off, including the museum, the underground city, three viewpoints, lunch and the pottery visit in Avanos.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Pickup and drop-off are included from hotels in Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos, Çavuşin, Ortahisar, Mustafapaşa and Nevşehir.
What is included?

The small-group options are priced per person, while the private option covers your own group. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?
Children are welcome and usually enjoy the underground city. The tunnels are low and narrow and the museum paths are uneven, so the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs and can be tiring for anyone with limited mobility.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, a light jacket for the underground city, a hat and sunglasses in summer, warm layers in winter, a camera and some cash or a card for entrance tickets.
What is the difference between the Red Tour and the Green Tour in Cappadocia?
The Red Tour covers northern and central Cappadocia: Göreme, Uçhisar, the valleys around them and Avanos. The Green Tour heads south to a large underground city, Ihlara Valley and Selime Monastery. Many visitors do both on consecutive days.
Is Özkonak Underground City worth visiting?
Yes. It is quieter than the better-known underground cities further south, and it shows the rolling stone doors and the holes used to talk between floors very clearly, which makes the guided visit easy to follow.
What is served at lunch?
On the default option you have an open buffet at a local restaurant in Avanos with Turkish soups, salads, stews and grilled meat, which is halal as in most restaurants in the region, plus vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices. If you book the option without lunch, you have free time to eat as you like.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
The tour runs daily all year. Spring and autumn bring mild days and soft light; summer is hot at midday, and winter can bring snow that makes the fairy chimneys especially photogenic. The underground city keeps the same cool temperature in every season.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date, time and option in the booking panel and complete the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your pickup details the day before the tour.
