Full Description

Derinkuyu and the underground cities of Cappadocia

Cappadocia hides dozens of underground cities, and Derinkuyu is the best known: it descends around 85 metres over several levels and could shelter thousands of people together with their animals and food stores. Its galleries were first dug in antiquity and greatly enlarged in Byzantine times, when villagers retreated below ground during raids. The city was rediscovered in 1963 when a local resident broke through a wall in his house cellar.

On this Cappadocia underground city tour you visit one of these rock-cut cities with your guide; the supplier's route uses the underground city of Kayaşehir in Nevşehir, and we confirm the exact underground city with you when you book. Whichever site it is, you see the same remarkable engineering: low passages, communal kitchens blackened by smoke, storage rooms for grain and oil, and wells reaching groundwater.

Inside the underground city: what you will see

The visit follows lit passages that link chambers carved at different depths. Look for the huge round stone doors that could be rolled across corridors from the inside, the vertical ventilation shafts that kept air fresh many levels down, and the stables placed near the surface so animals could be brought in quickly. Your guide explains how families lived here for weeks at a time and how the rooms were used.

Some corridors are low and narrow, so you will bend and walk slowly in places; the underground city is not suitable for people with claustrophobia or reduced mobility. The temperature below ground stays cool all year, which is welcome in summer, so a light layer is useful. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip, as floors are uneven and some steps are steep.

Devrent Valley, the Imagination Valley

Devrent Valley lies between Ürgüp and Avanos and has no cave churches or houses, which makes its rock shapes stand out even more. Wind and rain have carved the soft pink tuff into forms that look like animals and figures, and the most famous is a rock shaped like a sitting camel. That is why it is often called Imagination Valley: everyone sees something different.

The stop is a gentle walk on open ground with plenty of space for photographs. It is one of the best places in Cappadocia to understand how fairy chimneys form, with hard basalt caps protecting the softer rock beneath them. Mornings and late afternoons bring the warmest light, and the guide points out the shapes that visitors usually miss.

Uçhisar and Ürgüp viewpoints

Uçhisar is crowned by a towering rock castle, the highest point in the area, riddled with old rooms and pigeon houses. From the viewpoints around it you look across Pigeon Valley towards Göreme and Mount Erciyes on clear days. The stop gives you about half an hour for panoramic photos and a sense of the scale of the Cappadocian landscape.

In Ürgüp, a lively town of old stone mansions, the tour pauses for a photo stop of about twenty minutes. The views take in rock formations and the town's historic quarter carved into the hillside. Together, these stops show you why a half-day tour in Cappadocia can cover so much: the main sights sit close together, linked by short drives through the valleys.

Avanos pottery workshop

Avanos sits on the banks of the Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, whose red clay has been shaped into pots here since Hittite times. The town is still full of family workshops, many of them in cool caves cut into the rock, and pottery is one of the best things to see in Cappadocia if you enjoy traditional crafts.

At the workshop a master potter shows how a lump of wet clay becomes a jug or vase on a kick wheel turned by the foot, and you can see the painting rooms where plates and bowls are decorated by hand. The stop lasts about an hour, including time to browse. With the private option you can also try the wheel yourself, and buying anything is entirely optional.
