Göreme Open-Air Museum

The Göreme Open-Air Museum is the heart of the UNESCO-listed Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia. In this small valley, monastic communities carved churches, chapels, refectories and living quarters into the rock between the 10th and 12th centuries, and decorated them with frescoes of biblical scenes in deep reds, blues and ochres. The Apple, Snake and Barbara churches show the range of styles, while the Dark Church, with a separate ticket, preserves the brightest colours because so little light enters it.

Plan about an hour with your guide, who explains the meaning of the paintings and how the monks lived. The museum is open daily, with longer hours in summer, and is busiest from late morning. Entry tickets are included only in the ticket options, so in the default option they are paid on site.

Uçhisar Castle

Uçhisar Castle is a tall rock citadel riddled with rooms, tunnels and pigeon holes, rising above the village of the same name at the highest point of central Cappadocia. For centuries it served as a natural fortress and lookout, and from its slopes you see across the valleys towards Göreme, with the snow-capped peaks of Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan on the horizon on clear days.

The tour stops at a viewpoint facing the castle for photos, a perfect angle to understand how people carved homes into the soft volcanic tuff. It is one of the best panoramas of the Cappadocia Red Tour and especially beautiful in the soft light of the morning. Climbing to the very top is optional and not part of the standard programme.

Paşabağ (Monks Valley)

Paşabağ, also known as Monks Valley, has the most famous fairy chimneys in Cappadocia: tall cones of soft rock topped with darker, harder caps, some of them split into two or three heads like giant mushrooms. Early Christian hermits carved small cells and a chapel into the chimneys to live in seclusion, and you can still look inside some of them.

Walking paths wind between the rock formations, giving you time for photos and a close look at how wind and rain shape the stone. Allow around 45 minutes here. Is Paşabağ worth visiting? Absolutely: it is the place most travellers picture when they think of Cappadocia, and the morning and late-afternoon light gives the rocks a warm glow.

Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley)

Devrent Valley, nicknamed Imagination Valley, is a lunar landscape of pinkish rock where erosion has sculpted shapes that look like animals and figures. The most famous is the camel, an unmistakable formation beside the road, but visitors also spot dolphins, seals, a sleeping lion and many more depending on their imagination. Unlike the valleys around Göreme, Devrent has almost no vegetation, which makes the shapes stand out even more clearly.

There are no churches or houses here, only open ground where you can walk among the formations and take photos. It is a short, fun stop, usually around 20 minutes, and a favourite with children. The contrasting colours of the rock are best in the afternoon, when the sun brings out the pink and cream bands.

Avanos and the Red River

Avanos lies on the Kızılırmak, the Red River, the longest river flowing entirely within Türkiye, whose iron-rich red clay has fed a pottery tradition going back thousands of years. The old town climbs up from the riverbank with stone houses, workshops and a pedestrian bridge, and many families still work at kick wheels the way their ancestors did.

On the Cappadocia Red Tour you visit a pottery workshop for a demonstration of how a bowl or vase is shaped on the wheel, and you may be invited to try it yourself. Afterwards you can browse the painted plates and tiles without any obligation to buy. The lunch options include a meal in the area, while in the default option you can buy lunch at your own pace.
