Full Description
Galata Tower, the Genoese watchtower above the Golden Horn
Galata Tower was built in 1348 by the Genoese merchants who ran the walled colony of Galata on the north shore of the Golden Horn, as the highest point of their fortifications. It is about 63 metres tall with walls nearly four metres thick at the base, and after the Ottoman conquest it served in turn as a dungeon, an observatory and, for two centuries, the city's main fire lookout; its cone roof was lost and rebuilt several times, last in the 1960s.
Is Galata Tower worth visiting when you can see it from everywhere? Our Istanbul team thinks the view from inside is the city's best single panorama, because it stands exactly where the Golden Horn meets the Bosphorus. A Galata Tower visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes with the audio guide, and the exhibition floors inside add the tower's own history and the story of the Galata quarter below.
The view from the seventh-floor windows
The upper floors are reached by lift and a final flight of stairs. While the top floor is being renovated, the panoramic windows on the seventh floor give the full circle: to the south the Galata Bridge, Eminönü ferries and the old city skyline with the New Mosque, Süleymaniye, Hagia Sophia and Topkapı on their hills; to the east the mouth of the Bosphorus with Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower; to the north the roofs of Beyoğlu.
Best time to visit Galata Tower is the last hour before sunset, when the light turns gold over the Golden Horn and the city lights come on while you are still inside; because the ticket is valid all day, you can simply arrive when the sky looks right. Early morning is the quietest. Allow extra time at dusk, when the queue for the lift is longest.
The practical visit: hours, queue and audio guide
Galata Tower opening hours are 08:30 to 22:00 daily, with one break: no entry is possible between 18:15 and 19:00 because of the staff shift change, so plan your sunset visit to enter before 18:00 or after 19:00. Your QR ticket lets you skip the ticket line, but everyone passes a security check at the door; a short queue there is normal and moves quickly.
The audio guide is an app on your own smartphone, so bring earphones and a charged battery. The tower has a lift to the upper floors, but the last section is a narrow stone staircase and the viewing level has no step-free access, which is why it is not recommended for wheelchair users. Children aged 0–6 enter free, with a document proving their age shown at the entrance.
Galata, Karaköy and the streets around the tower
The tower stands in a small square at the top of the Galata quarter, surrounded by narrow cobbled streets of cafés, instrument shops and the old Genoese houses of Bankalar Caddesi below. How to get to Galata Tower: take the T1 tram to Karaköy and walk eight minutes uphill, ride the historic Tünel funicular from Karaköy to the top and walk five minutes down, or take the M2 metro to Şişhane and walk five minutes.
A good plan is to combine the tower with a walk down to Karaköy for a fish sandwich by the water, or up to İstiklal Street and Taksim for the evening; the Galata Bridge below links you back to Eminönü, the Spice Bazaar and the ferries. All the eateries around the tower serve halal food as is the norm across Istanbul.
