You meet an English-speaking host near the palace at your chosen slot between 09:30 and 16:00, receive your ticket, bypass the queue and explore independently with an audio guide app in 13 languages including Arabic: four courtyards, the council hall, the kitchens, the treasury and the sacred relics. A second option adds a 45-minute guided tour first. The Harem needs a separate ticket at the palace, which is closed on Tuesdays. There is no group pace and no hotel pickup; allow two to three hours. Full Description
Topkapi Palace, the heart of the Ottoman Empire
Topkapi Palace was begun by Sultan Mehmed II in 1459, six years after the conquest of Constantinople, on the Byzantine acropolis at the tip of the historic peninsula, with the Golden Horn on one side and the Sea of Marmara on the other. For nearly 400 years it was both the private residence of the sultans and the administrative centre of the empire, a city within a city of courtyards, pavilions, kitchens and gardens housing thousands of people. The court moved to Dolmabahçe in 1856; the palace became a museum in 1924.
Is Topkapi Palace worth visiting? Our Istanbul team puts it first among the city's museums, because nowhere else do you walk through the real rooms where the empire was governed. A Topkapi Palace tour with the audio guide takes two to three hours; the skip-the-ticket-line entry saves the long queue at the gate, though the security check is for everyone. Children up to five enter free, and the paths are mostly flat with a few steps.
The first and second courtyards: gates, kitchens and the Imperial Council
You enter through the Imperial Gate behind Hagia Sophia into the first courtyard, a park-like space with the Byzantine church of Hagia Irene on the left, then pass the twin-towered Gate of Salutation, where everyone except the sultan once had to dismount. The second courtyard is the administrative heart: on the right the long palace kitchens with their rows of tall chimneys, where up to 6,000 meals were cooked a day, now displaying the sultans' collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain and Ottoman copperware.
On the left stands the Imperial Council hall, the domed chamber where the grand vizier and ministers met under a grilled window from which the sultan could listen unseen, and beside it the Tower of Justice, the tallest point of the palace. The audio guide explains each stop as you reach it; our team suggests doing this courtyard first, while the morning light is on the kitchens' chimneys and before the day's crowds build up.
The third courtyard: treasury, sacred relics and the Audience Chamber
Through the Gate of Felicity lies the third courtyard, once the sultan's private domain. Immediately inside is the Audience Chamber, where ambassadors were received on a canopied throne, and behind it the library of Ahmed III. The Imperial Treasury on the right holds the famous emerald-set dagger, the 86-carat Spoonmaker's Diamond, ceremonial thrones and jewelled armour, and usually has the longest line inside the palace, so go early or late in your visit.
Across the courtyard the Chamber of the Sacred Relics displays objects revered across the Muslim world, including items attributed to the Prophet Muhammad and the early caliphs, with Quran recitation played continuously; dress modestly and keep voices low here, as you would in a mosque. The audio guide gives the background of each relic in Arabic and the other languages. Allow at least 45 minutes for this courtyard alone, as both galleries deserve time.
The fourth courtyard: pavilions and the Bosphorus terraces
The last courtyard is the garden of pavilions where the sultans relaxed: the Baghdad and Revan kiosks with their blue Iznik tiles and mother-of-pearl doors, the gilded bronze canopy of the Iftar Pavilion on the terrace edge, the Circumcision Room and the tulip garden below. The terraces look over the Golden Horn to Galata Tower and over the mouth of the Bosphorus to Üsküdar and the Asian shore, the best free view in the old city.
Best time to visit Topkapi Palace is right at 09:30, or after 14:00 when the tour groups thin out; avoid Tuesdays, when it is closed, and remember that Topkapi Palace opening hours are shorter in winter. The Harem, the family quarters with their tiled corridors and courtyards, is a separate ticket bought at the palace if you wish to add it. End your visit with tea at the terrace café, then walk down through Gülhane Park to the tram.
