Full Description
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque
Day one begins on Sultanahmet Square between the two great buildings that face each other across the gardens. Hagia Sophia, consecrated in 537, carried the largest dome in the world for almost a thousand years and has been church, mosque, museum and, since 2020, mosque again; your private guide takes you through the visitors' route and explains the mosaics, the calligraphy and the marble. Opposite stands the Blue Mosque, completed in 1616 with six minarets and an interior lined with more than twenty thousand Iznik tiles.
Because this is a private Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque tour, your guide times the visits around the prayer hours and the security queue, and you spend as long as you wish inside each. Shoulders and knees are covered, women cover their hair, and shoes come off at the mosque door; scarves are available at the entrance.
The Hippodrome and Topkapi Palace
Between the two monuments lies the Hippodrome, the chariot stadium of Constantinople, where your guide points out the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column, the Walled Obelisk and the German Fountain, each with a story going back centuries. A short walk brings you to Topkapi Palace, the residence and seat of government of the Ottoman sultans for nearly four hundred years. You pass through its courtyards to the kitchens, the Imperial Council hall, the Treasury and the pavilions above the Bosphorus; the Harem, decorated with Iznik tiles, has its own ticket and is worth adding.
A private Topkapi Palace tour is especially valuable here: the palace is big, the labels are short and the queues at the Treasury are long, so a guide who knows which rooms to see first saves time. The palace is closed on Tuesdays, and the route is adjusted on that day.
The Grand Bazaar
Day one ends in the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with dozens of vaulted streets and thousands of shops selling carpets, gold, leather, ceramics, lamps and spices. Its core dates from the fifteenth century, and the old inns around it are still workshops. Your guide shows you the main streets, the jewellers' row and the quieter corners, explains how to judge a carpet or a piece of gold, and helps you bargain, which is expected and friendly.
The bazaar is closed on Sundays and on public holidays, so on those days your guide swaps it for the Spice Bazaar or another stop. Halal food is everywhere here: the bazaar's own restaurants and the kebab houses of Beyazıt are a good lunch break at your own expense.
The Spice Bazaar and the Bosphorus cruise
Day two starts in Eminönü at the Spice Bazaar, the Egyptian Market built in the 1660s as part of the New Mosque complex, where the aroma of dried fruit, herbs, teas, coffee and Turkish delight fills the vaulted hall. From the quays outside, you board a Bosphorus cruise and sail up the strait that divides Europe from Asia, past Dolmabahce Palace, the waterfront mansions of Ortaköy and Arnavutköy, the Bosphorus Bridge and the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı, with the Asian shore and Beylerbeyi Palace on the other side.
The cruise ticket is paid on the spot, and your guide chooses the departure that fits the day. On a private Bosphorus tour from Istanbul's old city, this is the moment to sit on the upper deck with tea and let the city pass by.
Dolmabahce Palace, Istiklal Street and Taksim
From the water you continue to Dolmabahce Palace, built in the 1850s on reclaimed land on the Bosphorus shore when the sultans left Topkapi for a European-style residence: a quarter of a kilometre of marble façade, the Ceremonial Hall with its enormous chandelier, and the clock tower at the gate. The palace is closed on Mondays, and the entrance fee is paid at the gate. A Dolmabahce Palace tour with a private guide moves at your pace through the halls that are open.
The day ends on Istiklal Street, the pedestrian avenue of Beyoğlu with its historic tram, arcades, churches and sweet shops, running from Taksim Square down towards the Galata Tower district. Your guide knows the side streets for tea or a halal dinner before the vehicle takes you back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
Fully private: the guide, and in the default option the vehicle and driver, are for your group only, and the programme follows your pace.
How long does it take?
About seven hours each day; choose a one-day option for the old city or the two-day option that adds the Bosphorus, Dolmabahce and Beyoğlu.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, in every option: the guide meets you at your hotel, and in the vehicle options a private air-conditioned vehicle with driver collects you and brings you back each day.
What is included?
The private licensed guide for the chosen number of days and, in the default option, the private vehicle with driver and hotel pickup and drop-off; entrance fees, the cruise ticket, lunches and drinks are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per group, by group size: the booking panel on this page shows the current price for your number of travellers, up to ten people.
What is the difference between the guide-only and the vehicle options?
With the guide-only options you move with your guide on foot and by tram, ferry or taxi, paying the small fares on the spot; the vehicle options add a private air-conditioned vehicle and driver for the whole day.
Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Families love it because the guide adapts the pace and the stories to the children; the days are not suitable for people with mobility impairments because of the walking and the steps at the palaces.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, modest clothing for the mosques, cash or a card for the entrance fees and lunch, water and sun protection in summer.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
Spring and autumn have mild weather and clear light on the Bosphorus; in summer start at 08:00 to beat the heat and the queues, and in winter the vehicle option keeps you warm between stops.
Can I change the itinerary?
Yes: tell us before the tour or your guide on the day; stops can be swapped, for example the Basilica Cistern or Galata Tower instead of a closed museum, or more time at the bazaar.
What happens in bad weather?
The tour runs in all weather; most stops are indoors, and in rain the vehicle option is the comfortable choice. If the Bosphorus boats stop in a storm, the guide replaces the cruise with another sight.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose the option, the dates and the start time on this page and send the booking with your hotel name; our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes.
