Full Description
The hammam room: scrub and foam wash
The heart of every Turkish bath in Istanbul is the hot room, where a heated marble slab sits under a dome and warm water runs into marble basins along the walls. Here the therapist begins the traditional ritual that has barely changed since Ottoman times: a few minutes on the warm marble to open the pores, then the kese, a coarse mitt drawn over the whole body to lift away dead skin, and the foam wash, in which a cloud of soap is squeezed from a muslin bag over you and worked in with long strokes before a rinse with bowls of warm water.
In this spa the hammam session takes place in a private bath room rather than a crowded public hall, and the 30-minute scrub and foam wash finishes with a face mask. It is the part first-time visitors remember most, and the reason a Turkish bath near the Grand Bazaar is on so many Istanbul lists.
The massage room: 85 minutes with natural oils
After the hammam you move, wrapped in a fresh peştemal, to a private massage room where only you and your therapist are present. The default package gives an 85-minute massage with natural, premium oils that nourish the skin after the scrub; the record describes classic Ottoman-style techniques alongside Far Eastern methods, and the therapists adapt the pressure to what you ask for. Shorter packages on this page give a 55-minute oil massage or a 30-minute massage after the same scrub and foam.
All massage therapists at this spa are women, which matters to many of our guests, and the massage rooms are completely private. Towels, slippers and hair dryers are provided, so you need bring only swimwear and comfortable clothes. Plan the massage for the end of your sightseeing day: you will not want to walk far afterwards.
Steam room, sauna, pool and resting room
Beyond the timed treatments, every package except the basic spa entry gives you free time in the facility's common areas: a menthol steam room that clears the airways after a dusty day in the bazaar, a dry sauna, a pool and a resting room where Turkish tea and other hot drinks are served without charge. Many guests arrive half an hour before their treatment to warm up in the steam room, and stay an hour afterwards by the pool.
The common areas, including the sauna, steam room, pool and fitness area, may be used by men and women at the same time, so swimwear is required there; the hammam and massage rooms are private. The two-hour spa-access option on this page uses only these common areas, without the hammam ritual or massage.
The old city around the spa: Beyazıt and the Grand Bazaar
The spa is on the first floor of a hotel building in the old city between Beyazıt Square and Gedikpaşa, below the Grand Bazaar. Beyazıt Square, with its early-sixteenth-century mosque, the gate of Istanbul University and the booksellers' market, is five minutes away, and the Beyazıt–Kapalıçarşı stop of the T1 tram puts Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Karaköy within a few stops. The Grand Bazaar, with its covered streets of lamps, carpets, leather and gold, is closed on Sundays and public holidays but open until the early evening on other days.
This is why so many visitors look for a Turkish bath in Sultanahmet or a hammam near the Grand Bazaar: after a morning in Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque and an afternoon of bargaining, the spa is on the way back and the evening start times run until 21:00.
