Full Description
The Galata atelier
The workshop takes place in a street-level studio in the Galata quarter of Beyoğlu, a few minutes' walk from Galata Tower, in the lanes of old stone buildings, design shops and cafés that climb from Karaköy up to Istiklal Street. The studio is bright and spacious, with a long work table, rows of small amber bottles of oils, smelling strips, pipettes and a magnetic stirrer at each place. It is a world away from the souvenir perfume shops of the bazaar: here you make the fragrance yourself.
Sessions start every two hours from 08:00 to 20:00, so a perfume workshop in Istanbul fits before a morning at the tower, between lunch and a Bosphorus cruise, or as an evening activity. The nearest stops are Şişhane on the M2 metro, the Tünel funicular at the end of Istiklal Street and the Karaköy tram stop down the hill.
Learning the notes and smelling 100 oils
The session opens with a short introduction to how a perfume is built: the top notes you smell first, such as citrus and fresh herbs; the heart notes that follow, such as rose, jasmine or spices; and the base notes that last on the skin, such as sandalwood, amber, musk or vanilla. Then the smelling begins. The atelier's collection of more than 100 oils, all certified for safe use on skin, is one of the widest in Istanbul, and the instructor helps you move through the fresh and citrusy, sweet and warm, woody and spicy, floral and unisex families until a combination feels like you.
This is the part guests remember: comparing a strip of bergamot with a strip of oud, discovering that a touch of black pepper lifts a rose, and writing your formula down as it takes shape.
Blending and bottling your signature scent
Once your formula is chosen, it is measured out and mixed on a magnetic stirrer so that the oils combine smoothly into a balanced blend, and the perfume is bottled at a 25% fragrance concentration, among the highest on the market, which means it lasts well on the skin. Your 50 ml glass bottle is labelled with the name you give it and boxed for you; if you would like more, a 100 ml bottle is available on site for an extra fee. The whole process takes about an hour to an hour and a half.
Because the formula is yours, the atelier keeps it on record, so the same scent can be made again later. Many guests make a perfume as a gift for someone special or a matching pair as a couple; it is one of the most personal things you can bring back from Istanbul.
Galata Tower and the streets around it
The atelier's address makes it easy to combine with the neighbourhood. Galata Tower, built in 1348 as the watchtower of the Genoese colony on this hill, is a few minutes away and is worth climbing for its gallery with views over the Golden Horn, the old city and the Bosphorus; it opens daily and has its own ticket. Around it, Serdar-ı Ekrem Street and the lanes down to Karaköy are full of small design shops, bookshops and cafés, and the Galata Mevlevi Lodge on the way up to Tünel hosts whirling dervish ceremonies.
Uphill, Istiklal Street begins at the Tünel funicular, and downhill the Galata Bridge crosses to Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar. Halal restaurants and tea houses are everywhere, so a perfume workshop near Galata Tower makes an easy half-day on foot.
