Full Description
The Basilica Cistern, the underground palace of Constantinople
The Basilica Cistern was built in 532 during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, on the site of an earlier 4th-century basilica, to store water for the Great Palace of the Byzantine emperors. It is the largest of the hundreds of cisterns beneath Istanbul: a hall of about 140 by 70 metres with 336 columns in 12 rows under brick vaults. Water travelled nearly 20 kilometres from the Belgrade Forest through the Valens and Mağlova aqueducts, and the cistern held up to 80,000 cubic metres.
Is the Basilica Cistern worth visiting? For our Istanbul team it is the most atmospheric half hour in Sultanahmet: you descend 52 stone steps from a noisy street into cool, dripping silence, with amber light on the columns and carp moving in the shallow water. Many columns were recycled from older Roman temples, which is why the capitals do not match and why the Medusa heads ended up here. A Basilica Cistern tour with the audio guide takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
The columns, the Medusa heads and the Weeping Column
Raised walkways lead you between the rows of columns, most in Ionic and Corinthian style, past the artistic installations and lighting that were added in the latest restoration. The best part sits at the far north-west corner: two column bases carved as Medusa heads, one placed sideways and one upside down. Nobody knows for certain why; the usual explanation is that the builders simply used them as blocks of the right height, while popular belief says the heads were turned so their gaze could not petrify anyone.
Look also for the Weeping Column, or Hen's Eye column, engraved with teardrop shapes and peacock eyes, which is said to honour the hundreds of slaves who died building the cistern; its surface is always damp. The audio guide explains each of these spots as you reach them, so put your earphones in before you descend. Photography is allowed without flash, and the low light rewards a steady hand or a phone with night mode.
The practical visit: hours, tickets and the security line
Basilica Cistern opening hours are 09:00 to 18:00 every day, and your ticket is valid at any time on the chosen date, so you can slot it between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Skip-the-ticket-line means you bypass the ticket desk, not the security check, which everyone passes; the line there is longest between 11:00 and 15:00 in summer, so our team recommends the first hour of the morning or after 16:30. Bring your passport or ID card.
The cistern is humid, up to 96 percent, and water drips from the ceiling, so protect phones and cameras and wear shoes with grip on the wet walkways. Anyone sensitive to darkness, damp or low air circulation should take it slowly. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Touching the water, entering it or taking the wish coins is forbidden. Download the audio guide from the emailed link in advance, as there is no Wi-Fi inside; once downloaded it works offline.
Sultanahmet around the cistern
How to get to the Basilica Cistern: take the T1 tram to the Sultanahmet stop and walk two minutes along Yerebatan Street; the entrance is a small building on the corner facing Hagia Sophia, opposite the tram line. From Topkapı Palace or the Blue Mosque it is a five-minute walk. Because the ticket has no time slot, it pairs naturally with a morning at Hagia Sophia and an afternoon at the Grand Bazaar, which is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Around the exit are cafés, the Milion stone that marked the starting point of all Byzantine roads, and the gardens of the Hippodrome. If you choose the guided option, your guide meets you at the café beside the entrance and brings the Byzantine water system and the city's later history to life for about an hour. All the restaurants in the area serve halal food, and the mosques close to visitors briefly at prayer times, so check the timetable if you plan to continue to the Blue Mosque.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private experience?
The default option is an individual entry ticket with an audio guide app, so you visit alone at your own pace; the second option is a small guided tour shared with other visitors.
How long does a visit to the Basilica Cistern take?
About 30 to 45 minutes with the audio guide; the guided tour lasts about one hour. Add time for the security line in summer.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The cistern is in the heart of Sultanahmet, two minutes from the tram stop and opposite Hagia Sophia.
What is included?
Skip-the-ticket-line entry and, in the default option, the audio guide app in 25 languages; the second option includes a guided tour instead of the app. Transport and Wi-Fi are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person; the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Children are welcome but those under 15 must be with an adult; the 52 steps down and the wet walkways make it difficult for wheelchair users and anyone who struggles with stairs.
Is the Basilica Cistern audio guide available in Arabic?
Yes. The app offers 25 languages including Arabic, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Urdu, Persian, Hindi and Chinese.
What should I bring?
Your passport or ID, a charged phone with the audio guide downloaded, earphones, shoes with grip and a light layer, as it is cool and damp inside.
What is the best time to visit the Basilica Cistern?
Right after opening at 09:00 or after 16:30, when the security line is shortest; midday in summer is the busiest.
Can I see the Medusa heads with this ticket?
Yes. Both Medusa column bases are on the regular walkway route in the far corner of the cistern.
What happens on Fridays?
The cistern and the ticket option work every day; only the guided-tour option does not run on Fridays.
