Overview
One full day in Sultanahmet with a licensed guide who works for your group alone, covering the six sights every first visit to Istanbul needs: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Basilica Cistern, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar. The default option adds an air-conditioned vehicle with driver that collects you from your hotel, holiday apartment or the Galataport cruise terminal in Karaköy and stays with you between the sights; a walking version is also offered. Your guide arranges priority tickets for Hagia Sophia, Topkapi and the cistern so you skip the ticket lines, orders the day around prayer times and closing days, and finishes back at your hotel about seven hours after the start. Ideal for cruise passengers with a single day in port.

Full Description
Hagia Sophia
The day begins at Hagia Sophia, the church built in 537 whose dome, 31 metres across and 56 metres high, was the largest in the world for nearly a thousand years and the model for every great Ottoman mosque that followed. Your guide collects the priority ticket while you wait by the entrance and then walks you through the imperial door into the nave, pointing out the marble panels, the gilded calligraphy roundels and the Byzantine mosaics of the upper galleries, and explaining the building's life as cathedral, mosque, museum and, since 2020, mosque again.
Because it is a working mosque, entry is restricted during the five daily prayers and on Fridays the building is seen from outside only, so your guide places the visit in the morning before the noon prayer. Modest dress is required and women cover their hair; about 50 minutes.
The Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome
Facing Hagia Sophia across Sultanahmet Square is the Blue Mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque of 1616, named for the 20,000 blue Iznik tiles that line its interior and famous for its six minarets. It closes to visitors during prayers and until 14:00 on Fridays, so the guide takes you in when the courtyard reopens, usually after the noon prayer, and explains the ablution fountains, the cascade of domes and the tile panels in the women's gallery. Shoes come off and bags are provided for them.
Beside the mosque lies the Hippodrome, the Byzantine chariot-racing track that is now a long garden holding the Obelisk of Theodosius from Egypt, the bronze Serpent Column from Delphi and the Walled Obelisk, with the German Fountain of 1900 at its end. Your guide reads the carvings on the obelisk's base, which show the emperor watching the races from the very spot where you stand.
The Basilica Cistern
A short walk from the square, the Basilica Cistern is the largest of the underground reservoirs that kept Byzantine Constantinople supplied with water, built in 532 beneath a basilica with 336 marble columns in twelve rows and a capacity of 80,000 cubic metres. Rediscovered when residents were found drawing water and fish through holes in their floors, it was restored and reopened in 2022 with new walkways and lighting, and takes about 40 minutes with a guide.
Your priority ticket avoids the line that forms on Divanyolu by late morning. Inside, the guide points out the two Medusa heads used as column bases, the column carved with tears, and the way the Byzantines reused stone from older temples. The cistern is cool and dim, a welcome break on a hot afternoon, and the steps down are the only part not suited to pushchairs.
Topkapi Palace
Topkapi Palace, the residence and seat of government of the Ottoman sultans from 1465 until the court moved to Dolmabahçe in 1856, is the most time-consuming stop, and a Topkapi Palace private tour lets you choose what to see in two hours. Your guide buys the priority ticket at the Gate of Salutation and takes you through the second courtyard to the Imperial Council chamber and the kitchens with their porcelain collection, then through the Gate of Felicity to the Audience Hall, the Treasury with its emerald dagger and 86-carat diamond, and the Sacred Relics rooms.
The fourth courtyard's terrace, with its tiled pavilions and the view over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, is where the guide gives you time for photographs. The palace is closed on Tuesdays, when the Harem ticket is also unavailable; on those days the guide substitutes the Süleymaniye Mosque or Dolmabahçe.
The Grand Bazaar
The day ends in the Grand Bazaar, the covered market that began with a stone bedesten in 1461 and grew to 61 streets, 22 gates and some 4,000 shops under painted vaults. With a guide the bazaar becomes legible: the jewellers' street with gold sold by the gram, the old bedesten of antiques and weapons, the carpet hans with their quiet courtyards, the leather and ceramics lanes, and the tea sellers who thread through it all. The guide explains how to bargain politely and which shops locals trust.
The bazaar is open from 08:30 to 19:00 Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays, when the guide suggests the Arasta Bazaar behind the Blue Mosque instead. Lunch is not included, but the lokantas and kebab houses around the bazaar and Beyazıt are all halal and the guide knows the good ones; your vehicle collects you at the Nuruosmaniye gate for the drive back.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
Fully private: your guide, and on the default option your driver, work only for your group, and the order and pace of the day are yours.
How long does the Old City tour take?
About seven hours from pickup to drop-off, with a lunch break; start between 08:00 and 14:00, ideally by 09:00.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes; the guide meets you at your hotel, holiday apartment or the Galataport cruise terminal, and the default option includes the vehicle and driver for the whole day.
What is included?
The private licensed guide, the pickup and, on the default option, the air-conditioned vehicle with driver; entrance tickets, lunch, drinks and tips are paid on the day.
Are the entrance tickets in the price?
No; your guide buys priority tickets for Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern so you skip the ticket lines and you pay the guide for them directly. The mosques and the bazaar are free.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per group, for up to ten travellers, with or without the vehicle; the booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Do I need the vehicle if the sights are close together?
The six sights are within a 15-minute walk of each other, so the walking option works well from a Sultanahmet hotel; the vehicle is worth it from Taksim, the Asian side or the cruise port, and for families with young children.
Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?
Yes for families, and children under eight enter the museums free with a passport copy; the cistern has steps and the palace is cobbled, so tell us about any mobility needs and the guide adapts the route.
I am arriving on a cruise ship: does this work for one day in port?
Yes, it is designed for that: the guide and vehicle meet you at the Galataport terminal in Karaköy, ten minutes from Sultanahmet, and return you before all-aboard.
What should I bring?
Comfortable shoes, modest clothing and a headscarf for the mosques, passport copies for children, cash or card for tickets and lunch, and water in summer.
What if Topkapi is closed on my day?
On Tuesdays the guide replaces it with the Süleymaniye Mosque or Dolmabahçe Palace, and on Sundays the Arasta Bazaar stands in for the Grand Bazaar.
How do I book and confirm?
Book your option and start time on this page, and our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes with your guide's name and the meeting point.
