Full Description
A hotel spa in Pera, between Taksim and Galata
The spa is on the lower floor of a hotel on Meşrutiyet Street in Pera, the nineteenth-century European quarter of Istanbul that runs along the ridge from Taksim Square down to the Galata Tower. The street is lined with old embassies, the Pera Museum and grand stone apartment houses, and the spa sits in the middle of it, about eight minutes on foot from Taksim Square, three from the Şişhane metro stop and two from the top of the Tünel funicular. It is the natural choice for a private Turkish bath in Taksim if your hotel is in Beyoğlu, Cihangir or Galata, and easy from the old city by tram and funicular.
Because the hammam belongs to the hotel's spa rather than to a historic bathhouse, the architecture is modern, with a small domed marble bath, a pool hall and treatment rooms; what you gain is privacy, a swimming pool, long opening hours and a separate entrance that lets you walk straight down to the spa floor.
The private bath room: scrub and foam wash
The core of every option is the private Turkish bath: a marble hammam room heated from below with a central slab and basins along the walls, reserved for you, your partner or your family for the duration of the session, so couples and families can share the ritual together, which is not possible in the single-sex halls of the historic hammams. After a few minutes on the hot marble to open the pores, your female therapist gives the traditional 30-minute treatment: a thorough scrub with the kese mitt that lifts away dead skin, followed by the foam wash, in which clouds of soap foam are poured over you and worked into a full-body foam massage before being rinsed off with warm water from the basins.
Swimwear is worn throughout, and a peshtemal wrap, towels and slippers are provided; the staff speak English and will explain each step for guests visiting a hammam for the first time.
Massage room, face mask, sauna and pool
In the default two-hour option the bath is followed by a 50-minute massage in a private massage room, the stage most guests remember best after the heat and the scrub; the 100-minute option shortens this to 30 minutes, and the 50-minute option leaves it out. A refreshing face mask is applied in both longer options. Around the treatments you are free to use the shared facilities of the spa: the dry sauna, the steam room and the indoor swimming pool, with loungers beside the water and tea, coffee and water served in the lounge. Many guests swim first to relax, go into the sauna to warm up and then move to the hammam, finishing with the massage.
The order is flexible within your two hours, and the spa staff will suggest a sequence when you arrive; note that the pool, sauna, steam room and halls are shared with other hotel guests, while the bath and massage rooms are private.
Visiting the spa: hours, what to bring and nearby
Sessions start on the hour from 10:00 to 22:00, every day of the week, which makes this one of the latest-opening hammam options in Istanbul and ideal for the evening of a long sightseeing day. Bring swimwear, which is compulsory, and a change of clothes; everything else is provided. The spa is wheelchair accessible and has a separate entrance from the street, but the hot rooms are not recommended for pregnant women or people with high blood pressure. Food is not included, and there is no hotel pickup, so plan to arrive about ten minutes early by metro, funicular or taxi.
After your session you are two minutes from the restaurants and cafés of Asmalımescit and Istiklal Street, ten minutes downhill from the Galata Tower and the Karaköy waterfront, and a short funicular ride from Taksim Square, so a Turkish bath near Taksim fits easily into an evening in Beyoğlu.
