Overview
This is the most refined hammam experience in the old city: a luxury Turkish bath inside an original sixteenth-century double hammam on Hagia Sophia Square, in the garden strip between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. The default option is the complete 110-minute ritual: a personal care kit, warming on the heated marble, the traditional kese scrub and bubble-wash ritual, a full-body clay mask, then an aromatherapy massage with redbud-scented oil in a private room, a face mask and face massage, a foot massage, a fresh fruit plate, a private changing room and a farewell gift. Men and women are received in separate sections by same-gender therapists, so it suits couples and families booking side by side. Shorter 45 and 60-minute packages are listed here; sessions start hourly from 08:00.

Full Description
A 16th-century double hammam on Hagia Sophia Square
The hammam stands on the open square between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, where the great public baths of the Byzantine city once stood. It was built in 1556 by Mimar Sinan, the chief architect of the Ottoman court, for the wife of the reigning sultan, as a double bath with a men's section and a women's section laid out in a line under a row of lead domes, about 75 metres long in total. After long years of other uses it was restored to Sinan's plan and reopened as a working hammam in 2011, and today it is the best-known historic Turkish bath in Istanbul for original architecture with a luxury standard of service.
Inside, each section has the classic sequence: the cool hall with wooden galleries and changing rooms, the warm room and the domed hot room with its heated central marble slab and basins in the niches. A hammam in Sultanahmet with this pedigree is as much a monument visit as a bath.
The ritual, from the care kit to the clay mask
Every package starts at reception with a personal care kit: a newly made kese bath glove, shampoo, hair conditioner, body lotion scented with Judas-tree blossom, pure olive-oil soap and disposable anti-slip slippers. In the hot room you first rest on the heated marble for a while so that the pores open, then your therapist works over the whole body with the kese, the rough mitt that lifts away dead skin and leaves it noticeably smoother. The bubble-wash ritual follows, with clouds of soap foam poured over you from a cloth bag and a full-body foam massage on the warm stone, finishing with a head and neck massage and buckets of clean water from the basins.
In the 60-minute package and above, a moisturising and firming clay mask scented with redbud is spread over the body after the scrub; clay has been used in Ottoman bath culture for centuries and leaves the skin tight and refreshed.
Private massage room, fruit and the lounge
The 110-minute package, which is the default on this page, continues from the hot room to a private massage room, where the therapist gives a slow aromatherapy massage with redbud-scented oil designed for deep relaxation rather than strong pressure. A refreshing face mask is applied and followed by a face massage, and the session ends with a foot massage using the same oil. You then move to the lounging section of the hammam for a plate of freshly sliced fruit and a cold glass of house-made Ottoman sherbet, a fruit and spice drink that was the traditional refreshment of the Ottoman court, dress in your own private changing room and receive a farewell gift at the door.
Every package, including the shortest, ends with the sherbet in the lounge, so even the 45-minute ritual leaves time to sit under the wooden galleries and let the heat fade before stepping back onto the square.
Visiting the hammam: hours, etiquette and what is nearby
Sessions start on the hour from 08:00 to 20:00 (until 19:00 for the 110-minute package), and the early slots are the quietest. Come to the reception about ten minutes before your time with your confirmation; the hammam is three minutes on foot from the Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram and a few steps from both mosques, so it fits naturally after a morning of sightseeing. Disposable underwear and a peshtemal wrap are provided, and the sections are strictly single-sex with same-gender therapists, so no swimwear is required. Large luggage cannot be stored, so bring nothing bigger than a backpack or handbag; smoking and pets are not allowed, and the hammam is not suitable for children under six, pregnant women, wheelchair users or visually impaired guests.
Afterwards, the Arasta Bazaar, the Basilica Cistern and the cafés of Sultanahmet are all within five minutes, and a Turkish bath in Sultanahmet before an evening flight is a favourite way to end a stay in Istanbul.

The hot room is shared with other guests of the same gender, while the 110-minute package includes a private massage room and a private changing room; men and women are always in separate sections.
How long does it take?
45, 60 or 110 minutes depending on the package you choose, plus the time you spend relaxing in the lounge with your sherbet.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The hammam is on Hagia Sophia Square, three minutes from the Sultanahmet tram stop, so almost every old-city hotel is within walking distance.
What is included?
The care kit, the scrub, the bubble wash, the foam massage and the head and neck massage in every package; the clay mask from 60 minutes; and the private room, aromatherapy massage, face and foot massage, fruit plate and farewell gift in the 110-minute package. All sessions end with a cold sherbet.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person, and the same for the men's and women's sections. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each package.
Can couples or families go together?
You book side by side, but men and women use separate sections of the hammam, so you meet again in the lounge afterwards. Children under six are not admitted.
What do I wear in the hammam?
Disposable underwear and a peshtemal cotton wrap are provided; the sections are single-sex and modesty is respected throughout, so no swimwear is needed.
Is it suitable for people with reduced mobility?
The marble floors are wet and there are steps between rooms; the hammam is listed as not suitable for wheelchair users or visually impaired guests.
What is the best time of day for the hammam?
The 08:00 to 10:00 slots are the calmest, the late afternoon is ideal after a day of walking, and the last sessions at 19:00 or 20:00 suit evening flights.
Which package should I choose?
The 45-minute ritual is the classic bath, the 60-minute adds the clay mask, and the 110-minute package is the full luxury experience with the private room, massage, fruit and gift; most guests who come once choose the complete package.
