Full Description
Hagia Sophia: the upper gallery route
Hagia Sophia was consecrated in 537 as the cathedral of Constantinople, became a mosque after 1453, a museum in 1934 and a mosque again in 2020. Its central dome, roughly 31 metres wide, floats on a ring of forty windows, and every great Ottoman mosque in Istanbul answers it. With this Hagia Sophia ticket you enter through the visitors' gate and follow the route up the stone ramp to the upper gallery, the floor reserved for tourists, while the ground floor is kept for worship.
The gallery is where the best mosaics survive: the Deesis with its finely shaded faces, the imperial panels of emperors and empresses, and the apse mosaic of the Mother and Child seen across the nave beneath the giant calligraphy roundels. The audio guide walks you from panel to panel; allow an hour. Hagia Sophia opening hours for visitors run from 09:00 to 19:00 with last entry at 18:00, and the building closes to tourists during Friday prayer from 12:00 to 14:00.
The Basilica Cistern
Across the tram line from Hagia Sophia, a small entrance leads down into the Basilica Cistern, the largest of the hundreds of ancient reservoirs under Istanbul. Built in the sixth century to store water carried from the forests north of the city, its roof rests on 336 marble and granite columns in twelve rows, many recycled from older temples. The cistern is about 138 by 65 metres, and since its latest restoration visitors walk on raised walkways above the water under slowly changing lights.
The two Medusa heads at the far end, one on its side and one upside down, are the most photographed corner, together with the column carved with tear-shaped motifs. Your Basilica Cistern ticket gives priority entry; the audio guide explains the engineering and the legends. It opens from 09:00 to 18:00 with last admission at 17:00, and it stays cool even in August, so many guests save it for the hottest hour. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
The Blue Mosque with audio guide
The Blue Mosque, officially the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, was finished in 1617 and faces Hagia Sophia across the square. Entry is free and no ticket exists, which is why this package includes an audio guide rather than a ticket: it tells you what you are looking at as you cross the arcaded courtyard, pass the ablution fountain and step into the prayer hall where more than twenty thousand blue-and-white Iznik tiles and over two hundred stained-glass windows give the building its name.
Because it is an active mosque, tourists enter only outside the five daily prayer times; the best windows are usually 08:30 to 11:30, 13:00 to 14:30 and 15:30 to 16:45, and on Fridays the mosque opens to visitors after the midday prayer. Shoes are removed at the door and bags are provided for them, shoulders and knees must be covered and women cover their hair; scarves are lent at the entrance but it is easier to bring your own. About 30 minutes is enough.
Planning your day in Sultanahmet
All three monuments stand within five minutes of each other around Sultanahmet Square, which is served by the Sultanahmet stop on the T1 tram line from Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş, and is a 15-minute walk from the Grand Bazaar along Divan Yolu. Our Istanbul team suggests a simple order: the Basilica Cistern at 09:00 when it opens, Hagia Sophia mid-morning, then the Blue Mosque in the early-afternoon window between prayers, with a halal lunch in one of the restaurants behind the Hippodrome in between.
Your tickets and audio-guide links arrive by email at 18:00 the evening before your visit, or immediately for same-day bookings. Download the audio guides on hotel wifi before you set out, because mobile reception inside the cistern and under the domes is weak, and bring headphones and a charged phone. Security checks at Hagia Sophia and the cistern are compulsory for everyone and can take longer on religious holidays or when cruise ships are in port.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a guided tour or a ticket?
The default option is a ticket package with audio guides for independent visits. A second option upgrades it to a 3-hour tour with a live English-speaking guide at 10:00, 11:00 or 14:00.
How long do the three visits take?
About an hour in Hagia Sophia, 30 to 45 minutes in the Basilica Cistern and 30 minutes in the Blue Mosque; around 3 hours in total, split as you like during the day.
Is hotel pickup included?
No. The sites are around Sultanahmet Square, next to the Sultanahmet T1 tram stop, and there is no meeting point for the ticket option.
What is included?
Priority-entry tickets to Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern, audio guides for both plus the Blue Mosque, and digital delivery by email. A live guide and headphones are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Do I have to visit at a fixed time?
No. The tickets are valid any time during opening hours on the day you choose, in any order.
Can I visit the Blue Mosque during prayer times?
No; tourists enter only between prayers, and on Fridays after the midday prayer. The included audio guide helps you plan the visit around the prayer windows.
Do I skip the queues?
You skip the ticket queue at Hagia Sophia and the cistern. Security checks are compulsory for everyone and take longer on holidays and cruise-ship days.
Is it suitable for children or for reduced mobility?
Children are welcome and those under 6 are usually free at the gates. The cistern and the Hagia Sophia gallery involve steps and ramps, so the package is not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
When is the best time to visit?
Early morning right after opening is the quietest at all three sites, and the cistern is a cool refuge at midday in summer. Avoid Friday midday at Hagia Sophia.
How does the audio guide work?
It runs on your own smartphone through links in the confirmation email. Download it on wifi before you go and bring your own headphones.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and number of travellers on this page; our Istanbul team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes, and the tickets follow by email the evening before your visit.
