Overview
This perfume making workshop is the most personal souvenir in Istanbul: two hours in a restored wooden mansion in Sirkeci, minutes from Sultanahmet, learning how a fragrance is built and blending your own. A professional perfumer explains top, heart and base notes and the city's old perfume and spice trade, then opens a scent bar of more than 80 essences, from Turkish rose and citrus to woods, spices and musks. You test and refine your formula with clear advice at every step, with Turkish tea, coffee and cookies while the blend settles, and finish by naming your perfume and labelling a 50 ml bottle to keep, with a recipe card and certificate. Full Description
A historic wooden mansion in Sirkeci
The workshop takes place in one of the old timber houses that survive in the lanes of Sirkeci, the district between Sultanahmet and the Golden Horn best known for its railway station. Istanbul was once a city of wooden mansions, and the few that remain in the old town, with their carved ceilings, bay windows and creaking stairs, are now treasured. This one has been restored as an atelier, so the session takes place in a cosy room of wooden panelling and antique rugs rather than a shop or a classroom.
The address is a few minutes' walk from the Sirkeci stop of the T1 tram and about ten minutes from Hagia Sophia, which makes the Istanbul perfume workshop easy to fit before or after a morning in Sultanahmet. Your instructor waits outside the entrance, under the old patisserie signboard, at the session time; the exact address comes with your confirmation.
Istanbul's perfume and spice trade
Fragrance is an old Istanbul business. Rose water and attar from the fields around Isparta, musk and ambergris arriving by caravan and ship, oud and incense from Arabia and spices from the Silk Road all passed through the warehouses of Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar a short walk from the mansion. The Ottoman court kept its own perfumers, and the lemon cologne sprinkled on your hands in every Turkish restaurant is the modern descendant of that tradition.
The session opens with a short, lively introduction to this history and to how a perfume is structured: bright top notes that greet the nose first, heart notes that carry the character, and base notes of wood, resin and musk that stay on the skin for hours. Knowing the rules makes the choices that follow much easier, and the instructor gives simple guidance for keeping a blend balanced.
The scent bar and your blend
Then the scent bar opens: more than 80 essences in small amber bottles, from Turkish rose, jasmine and orange blossom to bergamot and mandarin, cedar, sandalwood and oud, cinnamon, cardamom and clean musks. You smell your way through them on paper strips, shortlist the notes that feel like you and start measuring drops into a beaker with a pipette, writing the formula down as you go. The perfumer tests each stage with you and suggests what to add or reduce if something feels too sweet, too heavy or too faint.
Everyone's result is different, which is the point: a couple might make two perfumes that share one note, a traveller might build a scent around the rose and spice of the Grand Bazaar. There is time to experiment, ask questions and let the blend rest with tea, coffee and cookies before the last adjustments.
Naming, bottling and the practical side
In the final part you give your perfume a name, design its label and fill your 50 ml bottle, which you keep along with a recipe card listing your formula and a certificate from the workshop; the recipe means the scent can be recreated later. All materials are included, and tea, coffee, water and the handmade cookies are unlimited throughout. The session lasts two hours and runs at 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00, with an English-speaking instructor.
The workshop is not suitable for pregnant women because of the concentrated essences, and we suggest arriving without strong perfume on so your nose stays clear. Teens from 13 to 17 pay the youth rate and adults from 18 the adult rate; ask us about younger children when booking. The bottle fits easily in hand luggage within the usual liquids limit, so you can carry it on the flight.
