Pamukkale travertine terraces

Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle, is a hillside covered in brilliant white terraces of travertine. They formed over thousands of years as warm spring water rich in calcium carbonate flowed down the slope and left mineral layers behind, creating pools of turquoise water held in white basins. Together with Hierapolis, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Is Pamukkale worth visiting? It is one of Türkiye's most unusual landscapes, and walking barefoot through the warm shallow pools is unforgettable. To protect the surface, shoes must be removed on the terraces, so bring a bag for them. Plan at least an hour on the travertines, ideally in the late afternoon light when the white slopes glow.

Hierapolis, the ancient spa city

The Antique Pool

In the middle of Hierapolis lies the Antique Pool, a natural thermal pool whose warm, sparkling water covers fallen marble columns from an ancient portico. Entry to the pool is not included and is paid on site, with lockers and changing rooms available. If you plan to swim, bring swimwear and a towel and leave enough of your three hours of free time for the terraces and the ruins as well. The pool is optional, so you can also simply watch the swimmers from the terrace above.

How to get to Pamukkale from Antalya
