Overview

This is the classic Istanbul in one day: a small-group walk through the old city with a licensed guide, from Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in the morning, across the Hippodrome, through a halal lunch in Sultanahmet, into the courtyards and treasury of Topkapi Palace and finally down into the Grand Bazaar, where the tour ends and you are free to shop. The default option includes pickup from centrally located hotels and pickup points by air-conditioned vehicle at about 08:15 and skip-the-ticket-line entry at the two paid monuments; the entrance fees themselves are paid to the guide on the day. You can also meet the guide at the German Fountain, or book the same route as a private tour with a flexible start time.

Full Description

Hagia Sophia with a guide

The day opens at Hagia Sophia, the sixth-century Byzantine cathedral that became the Ottoman imperial mosque and is a working mosque again today, with the upper gallery reserved for visitors. Your guide takes you past the ticket queue through a separate entrance, up the stone ramp to the gallery, and spends about 75 minutes on the dome, the mosaics of the south gallery and the layers of history written on the walls, from Byzantine marble to Ottoman calligraphy. A Hagia Sophia guided tour makes sense of details you would walk past alone: the Viking graffiti, the imperial door, the weeping column.

As it is a mosque, shoulders and knees must be covered and women need a headscarf; on Fridays the gallery closes from 12:30 to 14:30 and the order of the day shifts accordingly. The entrance fee is not included and is paid in cash to the guide on the day, so bring it with you.

The Blue Mosque, Sultan Ahmed's masterpiece

Across the square stands the Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616 for Sultan Ahmed I and named by visitors for the more than 20,000 blue-and-white Iznik tiles that line its interior. It is the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets, and its cascade of domes is the city's most photographed skyline. You enter through the courtyard, remove your shoes and spend about an hour inside with the guide, who explains the tiles, the 260 windows, the mihrab and the daily rhythm of prayer in a living mosque.

Entry is free, but the mosque closes to visitors for about half an hour at each of the five prayers and for longer at Friday noon, so your guide times the visit around the call to prayer. Modest dress applies here too, and scarves and wraps are lent at the entrance. Our Istanbul team's tip: the tiles are at their bluest in morning light.

The Hippodrome and Sultanahmet Square

Between the two mosques lies the long square that was once the Hippodrome of Constantinople, the chariot-racing arena where up to 100,000 spectators gathered and where the city's riots and triumphs played out. The guide walks you along its central line to the three monuments that survive: the Egyptian Obelisk of Theodosius, carved around 1500 BC and raised here in 390 AD on a base showing the emperor at the races; the bronze Serpent Column brought from Delphi; and the rough-stone Walled Obelisk.

At the north end is the German Fountain, the domed, mosaic-lined pavilion presented to the city after the German emperor's visit in 1898, which is also the meeting point for guests who come without pickup. The square takes about 40 minutes with photo stops, and it is the best place to see Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque facing each other across the gardens.

Lunch in Sultanahmet and Topkapi Palace

Lunch is taken at a local Turkish restaurant in Sultanahmet, halal like every kitchen in the old city, with time to sit down for an hour before the afternoon. Then the group walks behind Hagia Sophia to Topkapi Palace, the residence of the Ottoman sultans from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, for a two-hour guided visit. Through the Imperial Gate and the Gate of Salutation you reach the second courtyard with the palace kitchens and the Imperial Council chamber, then the third courtyard with the audience hall, the treasury and the sacred relics, and the fourth with its tiled kiosks above the Bosphorus.

Topkapi Palace tickets are the second fee paid to the guide on the day; the Harem is a separate ticket and not part of the tour. The palace is closed on Tuesdays, when the tour visits a Byzantine cistern instead. Expect a security check at the gate.

The Grand Bazaar, where the day ends

The last stop is the Grand Bazaar, a ten-minute walk up from Sultanahmet along the tram line. Begun in 1461 soon after the conquest, it grew into a covered city of more than 3,000 shops along 60 streets under painted vaults, with hans, fountains and its own mosques. Your guide leads you through the main avenues, pointing out the old jewellers' street, the carpet and leather halls and the lanes of ceramics, lamps and spices, then leaves you with about an hour of free time to shop or simply wander.

The tour ends inside the bazaar and there is no hotel drop-off; the Beyazıt stop of the T1 tram is at the gate, and Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar are a downhill walk. The inner streets are closed on Sundays, when the guide ends the day at the bazaar's surroundings instead, so a weekday booking gives the full experience.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

The default is a small-group tour with a licensed guide and headsets when the group exceeds twelve. A private option with your own guide and a flexible start between 08:30 and 10:30 is also available.

How long does it take?

About 7 hours, from the 08:15 pickup or meeting until the end at the Grand Bazaar in the mid-afternoon.

Is hotel pickup included?

Pickup from centrally located hotels and pickup points is included with the default option; there is no drop-off because the tour ends at the Grand Bazaar, a short tram ride from most hotels.

What is included?

The guide all day, skip-the-ticket-line entry at Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia, lunch at a local restaurant and, on the default option, pickup. The entrance fees for the two monuments are paid to the guide on the day.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person on all options. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Which monuments do we go inside?

Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace (without the Harem) and the Grand Bazaar; the Hippodrome monuments are seen in the open square.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Older children who can walk all day enjoy it, and lunch is included. It is not suitable for wheelchair users because of steps, cobbles and crowded interiors.

What should I bring?

Cash for the two entrance fees, passport or ID, comfortable shoes, modest clothing and a scarf, water and sunscreen in summer.

What is the best day to book?

Any day except Tuesday, when Topkapi Palace is closed, and ideally not Sunday, when the inner Grand Bazaar is shut. Fridays shift the Hagia Sophia visit around the noon prayer.

Do we skip the lines?

You skip the ticket counters at Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia through a separate entrance; the security checks at each monument apply to everyone.

What happens if it rains?

The tour runs in all weather; most of the day is indoors in mosques, the palace and the covered bazaar, so bring a light raincoat for the walks between them.

How do I book and confirm?
