Full Description
The Hippodrome and Sultanahmet Square
The tour meets beside the Egyptian Obelisk on the Hippodrome, the ancient chariot-racing arena that is now the long square between the Blue Mosque and the Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum. The guide hands out headsets and uses the first minutes to read the square: the obelisk from Karnak set up here in 390, the bronze Serpent Column from Delphi, the Walled Obelisk and the German Fountain of 1901. From here all three sites of the tour are within a few minutes on foot.
Halfway through the tour there is a 30-minute break in Sultanahmet Square, the park between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, with time for tea, a simit or the toilets before the final site. The Sultanahmet stop of the T1 tram is three minutes away.
The Blue Mosque
The first site is the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, built between 1609 and 1617 and known as the Blue Mosque for the more than twenty thousand blue and white Iznik tiles that cover its interior. With the guide you cross the inner courtyard with its ablution fountain and thirty-domed arcade, learn why the mosque has six minarets, and enter the prayer hall through the visitors' door: the central dome rises about 43 metres on four great fluted piers, 260 windows light the tiles, and the mihrab, minbar and sultan's loge are explained in about an hour.
Entry is free, but there is a security line that the tour does not skip, and the mosque closes to visitors around the five daily prayers and on Friday until about 14:30; the guide adjusts the order of the sites to the day's prayer times. Dress code applies: shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, shoes off.
The Basilica Cistern
Five minutes away, across the tram line, a flight of steps leads down into the Basilica Cistern, the largest of the underground reservoirs of Byzantine Constantinople, built under Emperor Justinian in 532 to store water brought by aqueduct from the forests north of the city. Your pre-reserved skip-the-line ticket takes you past the ticket queue. Inside, 336 marble columns in twelve rows hold up the brick vaults above shallow water, and since the restoration completed in 2022 the walkways run at water level with new coloured lighting and art installations.
The two Medusa heads used as column bases in the far corner, one sideways and one upside down, are the stop everyone waits for; the guide explains the theories. The visit takes about 45 minutes, and the cool air is a relief in summer.
Hagia Sophia
The tour ends with about an hour in Hagia Sophia, the church built by Justinian in 537, converted into a mosque in 1453, a museum from 1934 and a mosque again since 2020. Since 2024 visitors who are not coming to pray use a separate entrance and ticket and follow a route through the upper gallery, and the pre-reserved skip-the-line ticket gets you past the line at that entrance. From the gallery the guide shows the dome, about 31 metres across and 55 metres high, the Deesis and imperial mosaics, the marble revetments and the great Ottoman calligraphy roundels.
The prayer hall itself is seen from above; it is closed to visitors during Friday prayer around midday. Hagia Sophia opening hours for visitors run through the day, and the guide chooses the order so your visit avoids the prayer closures and the longest security line.
Walking between the sites
Everything on this tour is within a five-minute walk, which is why it works so well as a single half-day: the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia face each other across Sultanahmet Square, and the Basilica Cistern entrance is beside the tram line on the Hagia Sophia side. The guide uses the short walks for the stories that connect the buildings, from the Byzantine Great Palace under the mosque to the fountain of Ahmed III and the Ottoman tombs behind Hagia Sophia.
Security checks at all three sites are airport-style and can take up to 45 minutes each at peak times; the tour cannot skip them, but the guide keeps talking while you wait. After the tour you are beside the Grand Bazaar tram stops and the Topkapi Palace gate for the rest of your day.
