Full Description

Karaköy and the mouth of the Golden Horn

Your yacht waits at the Karaköy pier, directly across from the Karaköy tram stop on the Galata side of the Galata Bridge. Our driver brings you here from your hotel in the old city or Taksim. Leaving Karaköy the yacht slides out of the Golden Horn with the Galata Bridge and the Galata Tower behind you and the whole historic peninsula ahead: the walls of Topkapı Palace on Sarayburnu point, the domes of Hagia Sophia and the six minarets of the Blue Mosque rising above them. This is the view that makes a private yacht on the Bosphorus worth it: the captain holds position wherever you want the photograph.

With only your own group on board you set the pace: stay out on the bow, sit in the saloon with tea, or ask the guide to explain what you are seeing. The route then turns north along the European shore past the cruise port at Galataport and the Kılıç Ali Pasha Mosque in Tophane.

Dolmabahçe Palace, Ortaköy and the Bosphorus Bridge

The first great landmark on the European shore is Dolmabahçe Palace, the 600-metre marble waterfront palace that replaced Topkapı as the sultans' residence in 1856, with its ornate gate on the quay, the palace mosque and the clock tower. The yacht passes close enough to see the carved stonework, and the guide tells how the palace was built and furnished. Further on come the smaller Çırağan Palace, now a hotel, and then Ortaköy Mosque, the baroque mosque that stands on a small square right at the water's edge with the Bosphorus Bridge soaring behind it, the most photographed combination on the strait.

The yacht usually passes beneath the bridge, officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the first fixed link between Europe and Asia, opened in 1973. On a sunset departure the sun drops behind the European hills just here; on a night departure the bridge cables are lit in changing colours. Photographers should be on the open deck for this section.

Beylerbeyi Palace and the Asian shore

Beyond the bridge the captain crosses to the Asian shore for Beylerbeyi Palace, the summer palace completed in 1865 for Sultan Abdülaziz and used to lodge visiting royalty, whose marble façade and twin bathing pavilions sit directly on the water below the Asian tower of the bridge. From the yacht you see it as its guests once did, arriving by boat. The Asian shore north of here is quieter and greener, with the waterside villages of Çengelköy and Kandilli, old wooden mansions known as yalı, and the Kuleli military school with its twin towers.

This is a good stretch for the tea and snacks, served by the crew as the yacht cruises slowly along the shore. Depending on your departure time and the current, the guide may suggest spending more time here or heading straight to the narrows; on a private cruise that decision is yours.

Rumeli Fortress and the narrows of the Bosphorus

The turning point of the two-hour cruise is the narrowest part of the strait, where Rumeli Fortress climbs the European hillside. Mehmed II built it in 1452 in only a few months to control shipping from the Black Sea before his siege of Constantinople, facing the older Anadolu Fortress on the opposite bank; its three great towers and crenellated walls are at their most impressive from the water, which is where this private yacht tour takes you. The second Bosphorus bridge, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, spans the strait just beyond.

On the way back down the European side you pass the bay of Bebek with its anchored yachts, the mansions of Arnavutköy and the hillside of Kuruçeşme. The captain keeps to the calmer water near the shore, which makes this part of the route smooth even on windy days, and the saloon stays warm on evening cruises in winter.

The Maiden's Tower and the return to Karaköy

Before heading back into Karaköy the yacht crosses to the Maiden's Tower, the small white tower on an islet off Üsküdar that has served as a lighthouse, customs post and quarantine station since Byzantine times; the present building dates from 1725 and was restored in 2023. A private yacht can circle the islet slowly, which the public boats cannot, and the view back across the strait to the lit skyline of the old city is the usual closing photograph. The guide ends the commentary here and the yacht returns to the Karaköy pier after about two hours.

Hotel drop-off is not included, but the Karaköy tram stop is across the road and taxis wait by the pier. For a longer day, the second option sails from 10:00 to 17:00 on a larger yacht for up to 17 guests, with swimming stops in sheltered coves of the Bosphorus and unlimited soft drinks on board, a summer favourite for families.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private cruise?

Private: the yacht, the captain, the crew and the guide are for your group only, and nobody else boards. Both options on this page are private.

How long does it take?

The default cruise lasts two hours from the Karaköy pier and back; the full-day swimming option runs from 10:00 to 17:00.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, pickup from hotels in the old city and Taksim is included on both options; drop-off after the cruise is not, but the Karaköy tram stop is across the road.

What is included?

The private yacht for up to 13 guests, captain and crew, an English-speaking guide, tea, coffee and sweet and salty snacks, and hotel pickup. The swimming option adds unlimited soft drinks. Meals and tips are not included.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per yacht, not per person: one price covers your whole group up to the yacht's capacity, whether you are two or thirteen. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Can we choose the departure time?

Yes, any hour from 09:00 to 23:00. Sunset departures are the most requested, so book those early; our team confirms the yacht's availability for your hour.

Is it suitable for children and for reduced mobility?

Children are very welcome and the crew provides life jackets; the whole group pays one price. Non-folding and electric wheelchairs cannot be taken on board because of the gangway.

Can we bring our own food or celebrate a birthday on board?

Yes. Tell our team when you book and we will arrange a cake or a meal from a local caterer; food in Istanbul is halal as the norm. Decorations can be brought on board.

What is the swimming option?

A seven-hour summer day on a larger yacht for up to 17 guests: the Bosphorus route plus stops to swim at sheltered coves, with unlimited soft drinks. It departs at 10:00 and is best from June to September.

What happens in bad weather?

The yacht has an indoor saloon, so light rain is no problem. If the strait is closed to small boats by a storm, our team moves your cruise to another time or refunds the booking.

What should I bring?

A jacket for the deck, sunglasses and sun cream by day, your camera, and for the swimming option swimwear and towels. Tea, coffee and snacks are provided.

How do I book and confirm?
