Full Description
From Istanbul Airport to the old city
Istanbul Airport lies about 40 kilometres north-west of Sultanahmet, and the drive takes 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic; our Istanbul team plans the departure so the drive back always leaves a safe margin for check-in. Your guide meets you at arrivals with a name board, and the driver waits outside with an air-conditioned vehicle. Most travellers arrive on international connections, so keep your passport handy for passport control, and leave your large luggage in the airport's left-luggage office or check it through to your destination.
A layover tour makes sense with a connection of at least five or six hours for the shorter options and nine or more for the 7-hour default; if you are unsure, tell our team your arrival and departure times and we will recommend the right option. Travellers landing at Sabiha Gökçen Airport can also ask us for a tour from there.
The Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome
The tour begins on the Hippodrome, the long square that was the chariot-racing stadium of Constantinople, where three ancient monuments still stand on the old central spine: the Egyptian Obelisk, the bronze Serpent Column and the Walled Obelisk. Your guide explains how the Byzantine emperors watched the races from the palace that once stood here and how the square became the heart of the Ottoman city afterwards.
A few steps away rises the Blue Mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, with its six minarets and cascade of domes. Inside, more than twenty thousand blue Iznik tiles give the mosque its name. It is a working mosque, free to enter outside the five prayer times; shoes come off, women cover their hair, and everyone wears clothing covering shoulders and knees. Your guide times the visit around the prayers so you are never kept waiting at the door.
Hagia Sophia
Across the park stands Hagia Sophia, built as a cathedral in the sixth century under the emperor Justinian, converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 and today a mosque again with a visitor route for tourists. Its dome, more than 30 metres across and seemingly floating on a ring of windows, was the largest in the world for almost a thousand years. Visitors enter through a dedicated gate and climb to the upper gallery, from where you see the Byzantine mosaics and the great calligraphic roundels together.
A Hagia Sophia layover tour saves time because your guide knows the visitor entrance and the quietest moments; the entry ticket for foreign visitors is paid on site. Allow about 45 minutes inside. Modest dress applies here too, and the gallery route involves a long ramp without steps, which most people manage easily.
The Grand Bazaar and the flavours of the old city
The Grand Bazaar, a short walk uphill from Sultanahmet, is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, with thousands of shops along more than sixty streets under painted vaults. Your guide leads you through the main avenues of jewellery, carpets, leather, ceramics and lamps, shows you the old hans inside and helps with bargaining if you want to buy. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays; on those days the shops along the streets outside and the Spice Bazaar are open instead.
Food is part of every layover: depending on the option and the hour, your guide suggests a kebab lunch, a simit from a street cart, Turkish coffee in a courtyard, baklava or Turkish delight, all halal as is the norm in Istanbul and paid for as you go. Then it is back to the vehicle and the drive to the airport.
Galata, İstiklal Street and the longer options
Travellers with a shorter connection often choose the 3-hour Galata option, which stays on the northern side of the Golden Horn: the medieval Galata Tower, the steep lanes of the old Genoese quarter, and a walk up İstiklal Street to Pera. It can start as late as 22:00, which suits evening arrivals. The 4-hour Spice Bazaar option is a relaxed afternoon of photographs, shopping and street food in Eminönü with the mosque next to the bazaar, without museum visits.
For long daytime layovers, the 8-hour museums option adds Topkapı Palace with the Harem, Hagia Irene and the Basilica Cistern to the old city sights, while the 8-hour full-day option combines Sultanahmet with Galata, İstiklal Street and Taksim Square and can also start from a city hotel. Both are priced per group rather than per person.
