Full Description
House of the Virgin Mary
The House of the Virgin Mary, called Meryem Ana Evi in Turkish, stands among pine and oak woods on Bülbüldağı, the Nightingale Mountain, about 7 km from Selçuk. According to tradition, Mary spent her last years here, and the small stone chapel you visit today was rebuilt on foundations that may date to the 1st century, with a later church built on top in the 6th century. It is a place of pilgrimage for Christians and also for Muslims, who honour Maryam as the mother of the Prophet Isa.
The visit lasts about 45 minutes. Inside the chapel visitors walk through in silence, and photos are not allowed. Below it are taps of spring water believed to bring blessings and a long wishing wall where people tie notes and pieces of cloth. Modest dress is appreciated. The site opens daily from morning to early evening, and being among the first visitors of the day, as cruise passengers usually are, means a calmer atmosphere.
Ancient Ephesus: Curetes Street and the Temple of Hadrian
Ephesus was a Greek port city that grew under Rome into the capital of the province of Asia and one of the greatest cities of the eastern Mediterranean. The site, listed by UNESCO since 2015, is visited downhill from the upper gate, so the walk is gentle. You pass the State Agora and the small Odeon, where the city council met, before descending Curetes Street, a broad marble avenue lined with fountains, statue bases and shops.
Halfway down stands the Temple of Hadrian, built in the 2nd century in honour of the emperor, its arched façade carved with a female head and swirling acanthus. Opposite are the terraced quarters of wealthy Roman families, and nearby the public latrines, where rows of marble seats show how social the Romans were. Is Ephesus worth visiting? Few places in the world let you walk such a complete ancient street from end to end.
The Library of Celsus
At the foot of Curetes Street rises the most photographed building in Turkey, the Library of Celsus. It was built between about 110 and 135 AD as both a library and a monumental tomb for Celsus, a governor of the province, whose sarcophagus still lies beneath the floor. Its two-storey façade, with columns, niches and statues representing wisdom, knowledge, intelligence and virtue, was carefully re-erected by archaeologists in the 1970s.
Your guide explains how the building was designed to look taller than it is, with the central columns slightly larger than those at the sides, and how scrolls were kept in wall niches protected from damp by a double wall. In the morning the façade is in soft light and the square in front is less crowded. On a shore excursion with a fixed schedule, this is where most of the free time for photos is given.
The Great Theatre and Harbour Street
From the library, Marble Street leads to the Great Theatre, carved into the slope of Mount Pion. Begun in the Hellenistic period and enlarged by the Romans, it could seat around 25,000 people and is still used for occasional concerts today. From the upper rows you see straight down the Harbour Street, a colonnaded avenue that once led to the port where ships unloaded goods from across the Mediterranean.
The sea has since retreated several kilometres as the river silted up the harbour, which is one reason the city was eventually abandoned. Your guide shows how Ephesus once looked across to the water and how the theatre served for assemblies as well as performances. In total the walk through the ancient city lasts about 1 hour 45 minutes. The site opens from 8 am into the early evening in summer and closes earlier in winter, and Ephesus tickets are arranged by your guide in advance so you skip the queue.
Selçuk and the Temple of Artemis
Selçuk is the small town at the foot of Ayasuluk Hill, where the ruins of a great basilica and the 14th-century İsa Bey Mosque stand near the old fortress. The tour pauses here for about 45 minutes for lunch, which is not included; your guide can suggest a local restaurant serving halal Aegean dishes such as small grilled skewers called çöp şiş, köfte, fresh salads and gözleme flatbreads.
Just outside town lies the site of the Temple of Artemis, counted among the wonders of the ancient world. Built in the 6th century BC and rebuilt after a fire in 356 BC, it was larger than the Parthenon in Athens. Today a single column, reassembled from fragments and often topped by a stork's nest, rises from a marshy field. The 30-minute photo stop helps you imagine its scale before the short drive back to Kuşadası port.
