Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE and one of the largest in the world, completed in 2007 and able to welcome more than 40,000 worshippers. Its 82 white marble domes, over 1,000 columns inlaid with semi-precious stones and reflecting pools make it the most visited landmark in Abu Dhabi.
Inside the main prayer hall you see one of the largest hand-knotted carpets ever made and huge chandeliers decorated with crystals. A Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque tour needs modest dress: shoulders, arms and legs covered, and headscarves for women; our guide provides an abaya for ladies. Opening hours for visitors are shorter on Fridays, so plan your trip accordingly.
Qasr Al Watan Presidential Palace
Qasr Al Watan is a working presidential palace that opened to the public in 2019. Its white granite and limestone buildings, a huge central dome of 37 metres in diameter and richly decorated halls show the craftsmanship of Arabian architecture and tell the story of how the UAE is governed.
Inside you can explore the Great Hall, the gift exhibition of the state, and the House of Knowledge library. Guides are not permitted to lead tours inside, so you explore at your own pace. Qasr Al Watan tickets are included on the premium and Grand Mosque-and-palace options. The palace may close for official events, in which case another landmark replaces it.
Etihad Towers Observation Deck
The five curved Etihad Towers, completed in 2011, stand near the western end of the Corniche. On the premium options you ride up to the observation deck on the 74th floor, about 300 metres above the ground, for sweeping views over the Arabian Gulf, the Emirates Palace and the city skyline.
It is one of the best viewpoints in Abu Dhabi and a great place for photos, especially on a clear day. If the deck is closed, the Founder's Memorial replaces it. The standard small-group options do not include this visit, so choose premium if you want the view from the top.
Louvre Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace and the Corniche
On Saadiyat Island you stop for photos outside the Louvre Abu Dhabi, opened in 2017, whose vast perforated dome creates a famous rain of light over the galleries below. Museum entry is not part of the tour, but the outside is spectacular and one of the most photographed buildings in the Gulf.
You also stop at the grand Emirates Palace, one of the most luxurious hotels in the region, and drive along the Corniche, a waterfront road of about 8 km with beaches, parks and turquoise sea. A day trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai is the easiest way to see these sights together without driving the 140 km yourself.
