Full Description
Dubai Harbour: where your yacht tour begins
Dubai Harbour is the newest waterfront district on the Dubai coast, built on reclaimed land between Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah. It combines a large yacht club, berths for superyachts and the city's main cruise terminal, so the quays are always lively. Check-in takes place at the yacht office near Gate 7, with a waiting area where you can relax before boarding.
Arrive 30 minutes before your departure so there is time to check in, meet the host and listen to the short safety briefing. Boarding starts about 10 minutes before the scheduled time, and the yacht leaves exactly on time, as departures cannot be delayed. As you motor out of the breakwater, look back for the first view of the skyline: the towers of Dubai Marina on one side and the long trunk of Palm Jumeirah on the other.
Dubai Marina: a canal city of glass towers
Dubai Marina is one of the largest man-made marinas in the world, a canal of around 3 kilometres dug inland from the sea in the early 2000s and lined with residential towers, restaurants and the Dubai Marina Walk promenade. Cruising inside it is the highlight of any Dubai Marina yacht tour, because the towers rise straight from the water on both sides and you look up at them from a deck that barely moves.
Your guide points out the twisting tower that turns a full 90 degrees from base to top, the cluster of very tall residential buildings at the far end and the footbridges that cross the canal. On the 3-hour sunset cruise you pass through the marina while the light is still bright, then return to the open sea to follow the coast. It is a calm stretch, perfect for photos and for getting to know the crew.
Bluewaters Island and Ain Dubai
Just off the beach lies Bluewaters Island, a man-made island linked to the mainland by a bridge and a pedestrian walkway. Its landmark is Ain Dubai, a giant observation wheel about 250 metres tall, one of the largest ever built. From the yacht you see the full circle of the wheel at once, something that is hard to frame from the island itself, and the low-rise shops and residences gathered at its base.
The captain usually slows down here so that everyone can take pictures with the wheel and the Dubai Marina skyline behind it. Your guide explains how the island was created from reclaimed sand and rock, and how this stretch of sea between Bluewaters and the shore has become one of the busiest leisure routes on the Dubai coast, used by yachts, ferries and water sports.
Marina Beach and Jumeirah Beach Residence
Next, the yacht follows the shoreline of Jumeirah Beach Residence, better known as JBR, where a line of residential towers stands right behind a wide public beach. In the late afternoon the sand fills with families, swimmers and runners, and the promenade called The Walk is busy with cafes and street performers. From the water you get the whole sweep of the beach in one view, framed by the marina towers.
Marina Beach, the sheltered stretch at the southern end, is the best-known city beach in Dubai and a favourite spot for paddleboarding. Your guide shares tips for visiting it on another day and explains how the city keeps its beaches free and open to everyone. This is also a good moment to enjoy the BBQ, which the crew cooks on board and serves as the yacht continues towards Palm Jumeirah.
Palm Jumeirah from the sea
Palm Jumeirah is the palm-shaped island that made Dubai famous, built from millions of tonnes of sand and rock between 2001 and the late 2000s. It has a trunk lined with apartment towers, fronds with private villas and an outer crescent that acts as a breakwater. On the extended sunset cruise the yacht runs along the outside of this crescent, so you understand the real scale of the island in a way that is impossible from the road.
Your guide explains how the island was surveyed by satellite, how the sand was sprayed into shape by dredging ships and why the crescent was needed to protect the fronds from waves. A Palm Jumeirah boat tour at this hour is special: the low sun turns the water silver and the towers on the trunk glow orange behind you.
Burj Al Arab at sunset
The turning point of the cruise is Burj Al Arab, the sail-shaped tower that stands on its own artificial island about 280 metres off Jumeirah Beach. Opened in 1999 and rising 321 metres, it was designed to look like the sail of a traditional dhow, and it remains the most photographed building on the Dubai coast. From the sea you see it as it was meant to be seen, standing alone above the waves.
The 3-hour departure is timed so that you reach this point as the sun sets, the best moment for a Burj Al Arab yacht tour, when the facade changes colour with the sky. The captain holds position long enough for photos before turning back towards Dubai Harbour, passing the marina towers again as their lights come on. You return to the quay about 3 hours after departure.
