Dubai Marina from the Water
Dubai Marina is one of the largest man-made marinas in the world, a canal of about 3 km lined with residential towers, hotels and a waterfront promenade. From the deck you see landmarks such as the Cayan Tower, which twists a full 90 degrees from base to top, and the forest of skyscrapers that gives the district its famous night-time glow.
A Dubai Marina yacht cruise is the best way to take in the scale of the area, as the towers are hard to photograph from street level. Starting inside the marina, the yacht glides slowly past moored superyachts before heading out through the marina entrance to the open Gulf.
JBR, Bluewaters Island and Dubai Harbour
Just outside the marina, Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) stretches along one of Dubai's most popular public beaches. Opposite it lies Bluewaters Island, site of Ain Dubai, the giant observation wheel that dominates this part of the coast, and a relaxed island promenade of shops and restaurants.
The cruise also passes Dubai Harbour, the city's newest marina and cruise terminal. This stretch is where you get the classic photo of the Marina skyline rising behind the beach, especially beautiful in the soft light of late afternoon, which is why many people consider it the best part of any boat trip in Dubai.
Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis The Palm
On the longer cruises the yacht follows the outer crescent of Palm Jumeirah, the palm-shaped island reclaimed from the sea from 2001 and visible from space. At the tip of the crescent stands Atlantis The Palm, the pink resort opened in 2008, one of Dubai's best-known landmarks.
Seeing the Palm from the water shows you how the fronds and the protective crescent were designed. The recommended 3-hour option includes this Atlantis leg; on the shorter cruises the route focuses on the Marina, JBR and the coast towards the Burj Al Arab.
The Burj Al Arab
The sail-shaped Burj Al Arab, 321 metres tall and opened in 1999, stands on its own artificial island off Jumeirah Beach and has become the symbol of Dubai's luxury tourism. Its white fabric facade is designed to look like the sail of a traditional dhow.
Guests without a hotel reservation cannot usually go inside, so the water is one of the best places to photograph the Burj Al Arab up close. The 2- and 3-hour cruises sail near the hotel, while the 1-hour Marina cruise does not reach it; check the route of your option if this view matters to you.
