Full Description

York City Walls

York has the longest and most complete medieval town walls in England, running for about three kilometres around the old city on lines first laid out by the Romans. The walls you walk on today date mostly from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, with fortified stone gatehouses and a raised stone walkway that gives views over the rooftops to York Minster.

The tour begins on Station Road by the small Cholera Burial Ground of 1832, right beside the walls, and soon climbs onto them for one of the best views in the city. Walking the York city walls is free, and many visitors ask whether it is worth it: on a clear day, absolutely, and this section is one of the most scenic.

St Mary's Abbey and the Museum Gardens

St Mary's Abbey was one of the richest Benedictine monasteries in the north of England, founded in 1088 and closed in 1539. Its soaring Gothic arches and broken walls now stand among the lawns and old trees of the Museum Gardens, beside the river Ouse, and the remains of the abbey church give a sense of how vast and powerful the monastery once was.

Here your guide sets the mood with stories, spell games and a costumed scene that makes the ruins feel like part of the wizarding world. The gardens are open daily and free to enter, and they are a peaceful place to return to after the tour for a picnic or a riverside stroll, with the Yorkshire Museum next door.

York Minster and College Street

York Minster is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, built over about 250 years between 1220 and 1472. Its Great East Window holds the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the country, and its towers dominate every view of York.

The tour passes the Minster and continues along College Street, where the timber-framed St William's College of the fifteenth century stands in the shadow of the cathedral. Around the Minster the old streets are full of medieval details, from carved doorways to tiny courtyards, which your guide points out on the way. Entry to the Minster is not part of this walk, but your guide will tell you the York Minster opening hours and the best time to visit it afterwards.

The Shambles, York's Diagon Alley

The Shambles is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe, with timber-framed buildings, some from the fourteenth century, leaning so far over the narrow lane that neighbours could almost shake hands from upper windows. It was once the street of butchers, and wide wooden shelves where meat was displayed can still be seen on some shopfronts.

Its crooked, magical look has made it famous as the real-life Diagon Alley, and today it is full of wizard-themed shops. The tour ends here with the final house scores and time to explore the shops. The best time to visit the Shambles for photos is early morning or evening, when the crowds are thinner.
