Full Description

Exhibition Square and York Minster

The tour begins at Exhibition Square, an elegant open space framed by the York Art Gallery and the medieval walls, just a few minutes' stroll from York Minster. The Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, built between 1220 and 1472 on the site of the Roman fortress headquarters. Its Great East Window, about the size of a tennis court, is the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in Britain.

From the top deck you see the Minster's three towers rise above the rooftops, a view that changes at every turn of the route. Visitors who want to go inside should allow about two hours, including the climb up the central tower for views across the Vale of York. Exhibition Square is also the best place to start your York hop-on hop-off bus day.

The city walls and medieval gateways

York has the longest surviving medieval city walls in England, running for about 3.4 kilometres around the historic centre, partly on Roman foundations. The bus follows sections of them, passing the great medieval gateways that guarded the roads into the city, with their portcullises, battlements and rooms where gatekeepers once lived.

From the open-top deck you look straight onto the ramparts and the people walking along them. One gateway on the north-east side, built in the fourteenth century, is the tallest of all and still has a working portcullis. Hop off at any of these stops to climb the steps and enjoy the views of the Minster from the top of the walls, one of the best free experiences in York.

The Shambles and the medieval centre

Stops at the Stonebow and Peasholme Green bring you close to the Shambles, the most famous street in York. Its timber-framed buildings, some dating from the fourteenth century, lean so far over the narrow lane that neighbours could almost shake hands across it. The wide window ledges were once used by butchers to display meat, and the street is now full of small shops and cafes.

Around it lies a maze of medieval lanes, known locally as snickelways, along with the busy market and historic churches. This is the heart of the city for shopping and photographs, so many passengers hop off here for an hour or two. Visit early in the morning if you want to see the Shambles without the crowds.

York Castle and the riverside

The route continues to the area of York Castle, where a thirteenth-century stone keep stands on a high grassy mound built after the Norman Conquest. The keep offers panoramic views over the rooftops from its wall walk. Next to it, the York Castle Museum occupies former prison buildings and recreates a nineteenth-century street with shops, a school and a police cell.

The bus then heads south past Fishergate and the Barbican, along the lively Bishopthorpe Road with its independent shops, and back through the leafy suburbs by the racecourse. Along this stretch the audio guide explains how York grew beyond its walls, and you see a quieter side of the city where local life goes on away from the tourist crowds.

The railway station, Memorial Gardens and Museum Gardens

Approaching from Blossom Street and the Mount, the bus passes the railway station, a curving nineteenth-century train shed that was once the largest station in the world. Nearby, the National Railway Museum displays historic locomotives, royal carriages and a Japanese bullet train, and entry is free. Memorial Gardens, beside the walls, is a peaceful spot for a short rest.

The loop ends at the Museum Gardens, botanical gardens beside the River Ouse with the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, the Yorkshire Museum and a Roman tower. Hop off here for a picnic on the lawns or a York river cruise from the nearby quay. Things to do in York are all within easy reach of the bus, which makes the ticket great value.

Planning your ride: timetable and tips

In spring and summer the buses run every day roughly every 15 to 20 minutes, from about 9:30 to 17:00 from Exhibition Square. In winter the service is reduced, with fewer departures and service on selected days only, so check the timetable for your dates before you travel. A full loop without stopping takes about an hour.

Is a hop-on hop-off bus worth it in York? The historic centre is compact, but the bus links the outer sights, saves energy and gives you a clear overview of the city on your first day. Sit on the open top in fine weather for the best photos, and bring a jacket. With the 48-hour ticket, you can spread visits over two days.
