Full Description

Pier 33 and the ferry crossing to Alcatraz

Every visit to Alcatraz starts at Pier 33, Alcatraz Landing, on the Embarcadero between Fisherman's Wharf and the Ferry Building; it is the only departure point for the island. The crossing takes about 15 minutes, and the companion audio guide begins as soon as you board, setting the scene with narration and soundscapes while the island grows larger ahead of you.

From the open deck you see the downtown skyline, the Bay Bridge to the east and the Golden Gate Bridge to the west, with the strong currents and cold water that once made escape so unlikely. How to get to Alcatraz from the city centre: walk along the Embarcadero, take the historic F-line streetcar to Bay Street, or ride a cable car to the waterfront and walk a few minutes.

Alcatraz history: lighthouse, fort and penitentiary

Alcatraz's first lighthouse, lit in 1854, was the first on the American West Coast. The island then became a military fort guarding the harbour, and a military prison from the 1860s. In 1934 the federal government turned it into a maximum-security penitentiary for prisoners other jails could not hold, with rules of strict silence and routine.

The prison closed in 1963 because salt air and age had made it too costly to run. The year before, three inmates had escaped on a handmade raft and were never found, a mystery that still fascinates visitors. Is Alcatraz worth visiting? For most people it is the most memorable sight in San Francisco: a real place whose walls, iron grilles and views tell the story without any staging.

The Cellhouse and the official audio tour

Inside the Cellhouse, the official audio tour, narrated by former officers and inmates, guides you in about 45 minutes. You walk down the main corridor the inmates nicknamed Broadway, look into the narrow cells barely two metres wide, and visit D-Block, where the isolation cells kept men in total darkness. The dining hall, library and the recreation yard complete the circuit.

Many visitors are struck by how close the city looks from the windows: inmates described hearing voices and music drifting across the water on still evenings. Stop at the control centre and the warden's office ruins, then step outside for the views from the yard. Allow at least two and a half hours on the island to combine the Cellhouse with the gardens.

Indigenous history, island families and the gardens

The companion audio guide reveals stories most visitors never hear. From 1969 to 1971, Native American activists occupied Alcatraz for 19 months to claim rights to the land, and their painted words still welcome visitors on the water tower. Before that, guards and their families lived on the island, and children took the ferry to school in the city each morning.

Those families and some inmates planted gardens on the bare rock; restored by volunteers, roses, succulents and fruit trees now bloom along the terraces. The cliffs host nesting seabirds such as cormorants and night herons, and some paths close in the breeding season. The companion guide ends on the ferry back with reflections on justice and renewal, giving the visit a thoughtful close.

Alcatraz night tour option

If you choose the Alcatraz night tour option, an evening ferry leaves Pier 33 in the late afternoon, timed so you see the sun set behind the Golden Gate Bridge and the city lights come on from the island. Park rangers welcome each group with an introduction, and special evening programmes run inside the prison.

Night visitors also reach areas that are not open during the day, and with fewer people the Cellhouse feels quieter and more atmospheric. Both audio tours are included at night too. Night visits are limited and popular, so book early, and bring extra warm layers, as the wind on the island is colder after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private experience?

It is a shared ferry and a self-guided visit: you explore the island independently with two audio tours, at your own pace.

How long does it take?

About three hours in total, including the ferry both ways. You can stay longer and return on any later ferry with space.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. You go to Pier 33 yourself; it is on the Embarcadero, easy to reach on foot, by streetcar or by taxi.

What is included?

The round-trip ferry from Pier 33, official Alcatraz admission, the official Cellhouse audio tour and the immersive companion audio guide.

Is the price per person or per group?

The price is per person, with a child rate for ages 5 to 11. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is it suitable for children or travellers with reduced mobility?

Children from about 5 years old enjoy the visit. A tram takes visitors with mobility needs up the hill, and the Cellhouse is mostly level.

Is the Alcatraz night tour worth it?

Yes, if you like atmosphere: the sunset crossing, ranger programmes, fewer visitors and areas closed by day make it special. The day visit gives more time for the gardens in daylight.

How do I get to Alcatraz?

The only way is by ferry from Pier 33 on the Embarcadero, which this ticket includes. The walk from Fisherman's Wharf takes about 10 minutes.

What should I bring?

Headphones, a charged smartphone, warm layers, a windproof jacket, comfortable shoes, water and a camera.

What is the best time to visit Alcatraz?

The first ferries of the morning are the quietest. September and October bring the clearest weather, while summer days are often foggy and cool.

What happens in bad weather?

Ferries run in fog and rain. If a sailing is cancelled for safety, we help you change your date.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose your date, option and ferry time in the booking panel and send your request; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your tickets.
