Full Description
Lake Tahoe, the jewel of the Sierra Nevada
Lake Tahoe sits at about 1,900 metres in the Sierra Nevada, straddling the border between California and Nevada. It is about 35 kilometres long and 19 kilometres wide, and with a depth of about 500 metres it ranks among the deepest lakes in North America. Its water is famous for its clarity and intense blue colour, which changes to turquoise in the shallows along the sandy shores.
Surrounded by pine forests and snow-capped mountains, the lake is a year-round destination: skiing in winter, beaches and boating in summer and golden aspens in autumn. A Lake Tahoe boat tour is the best way to understand its size and beauty, as many of the most spectacular views, including Emerald Bay, are seen at their best from the water.
Ski Run Marina and the south shore
The cruise departs from Ski Run Marina in South Lake Tahoe, the largest town on the lake, which lies right on the state line. From the harbour you sail west along the south shore, passing sandy beaches, waterfront cabins and the forested slopes that rise towards the ski areas above town. On clear days, the mountains around the lake are reflected in the calm morning water.
If you are asking how to get to Ski Run Marina, it is a few minutes by car from most hotels in South Lake Tahoe, and there is parking near the marina. Please arrive about 30 minutes before the 11:00 departure to check in. As the boat heads towards the bay, the captain points out landmarks along the shore and explains the history of the lake, from the Washoe people to the first resorts.
Emerald Bay and Fannette Island
Emerald Bay is a narrow inlet carved by glaciers at the south-west corner of the lake, enclosed by steep granite cliffs and pine forest and entered through a slim channel. Its name comes from the green and turquoise colours of its shallow water. Protected as a state park and a national natural landmark, it is often called the most beautiful spot on Lake Tahoe, and an Emerald Bay cruise lets you see it without the steep hike down from the road.
In the middle of the bay rises Fannette Island, the only island in the whole lake. On its rocky summit stand the stone ruins of a small tea house built in 1929, which you can see clearly from the boat. Above the bay, Eagle Falls tumbles down the mountainside, especially full in late spring when the snow melts, and Mount Tallac dominates the skyline.
The Vikingsholm mansion
On the shore at the head of the bay stands Vikingsholm, a summer mansion built in 1929 in the style of a Scandinavian castle, with carved wooden details, a sod roof planted with grass and wildflowers and granite walls quarried nearby. It is considered one of the finest examples of Scandinavian-inspired architecture in the United States and is now part of the state park.
From the water, the mansion looks as if it has grown out of the forest. Your captain shares the story of how it was built and why its designers chose this setting, which reminded them of the fjords of Norway. Is Emerald Bay worth visiting? For many travellers it is the highlight of a Tahoe trip, and the cruise offers one of the most relaxing ways to enjoy it.
