A headphone audio tour explains the landmarks, history and wildlife on the way. Full Description

Under the Golden Gate Bridge

The cruise leaves from Fisherman's Wharf and heads west along the city's northern shore, past the Marina District, to the Golden Gate Bridge. Completed in 1937, it was for a time the longest suspension bridge in the world, and it is still the symbol of San Francisco. Passing directly beneath it shows you the scale of its towers and the height of the roadway above the water.

Many visitors ask whether a bay cruise is worth it if they have already seen the bridge from the road. From the water you see the whole structure and the narrow strait, called the Golden Gate, where the ocean enters the bay. It is a very different picture from a photo at the viewpoint on land.

Alcatraz Island and Angel Island

After the Golden Gate the boat turns into the bay and passes Alcatraz Island, once the site of one of the most notorious prisons in the United States. Seen from the water, the cellhouse and lighthouse look small against the skyline, which helps explain how the island earned its reputation as an isolated place. The audio tour tells the story of the prison years.

You also see Angel Island, a wooded island that was once an immigration station and military post and is now a state park, and the waterfront town of Sausalito across the bay. These stops in the commentary add context if you plan to visit them later, on another day.

The Bay Bridge and the San Francisco waterfront

The second half of the cruise runs east along the waterfront toward the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which opened in 1936 and carries traffic between San Francisco and the East Bay. Passing beneath it gives you a view of the Embarcadero, the piers and the Ferry Building, and the skyline from an unusual angle.

The commentary explains how the two bridges are different in design, one a single-deck suspension bridge painted orange and the other a double-deck crossing that passes through a tunnel in Yerba Buena Island. This makes the trip a good choice for people who enjoy architecture or engineering, and it also works well for families who just want to be on the water.

On board: the audio tour and planning

Each passenger uses headphones for an audio tour that covers landmarks, history, natural history and architecture, so you can listen in your own language and at your own pace. The boat has indoor and outdoor viewing, so you can go outside for photos and warm up inside when needed. Snacks and drinks are not included.

There are two departures a day, one late morning and one in the afternoon; check the times for your date in the booking panel. It is cooler and windier on the bay, so bring a jacket in every season. Meet at the departure pier confirmed in your voucher, and arrive early for boarding.
