Full Description
Angkor Wat at sunrise
Angkor Wat was built in the early twelfth century as a Hindu temple and later became a Buddhist site, and it is the largest religious monument in the world. Its five towers rise above a wide moat, and at sunrise they appear in silhouette against the glow of the sky. People often ask whether the sunrise at Angkor Wat is worth the early start, and the answer from most guests is yes, especially when you arrive with a private driver and avoid the rush for the best spot.
After the colour fades you enter the temple. Long galleries are carved with bas-reliefs of epic battles and heavenly scenes, and the central tower can be climbed on most days. Your guide explains what you see and times the visit so that you can leave before the heat builds.
Angkor Thom and the Bayon
Angkor Thom is the walled royal city built by a late twelfth-century Khmer ruler. Visitors enter through the south gate, over a causeway lined with giant stone figures, and arrive at the Bayon, the temple at the centre of the city. Its towers are carved with huge smiling faces that gaze in every direction, an image that has come to represent Angkor itself.
Your tuk-tuk takes you straight to the gate, which is a pleasure on a private tour because you can stop for photographs along the road. The best time to visit the Bayon is in the morning, when the light picks out the carved faces. Your guide points out the reliefs of daily life and ancient battles on the outer gallery.
Ta Keo, the temple-mountain
Ta Keo was begun at the end of the tenth century and never finished, which is why its sandstone blocks stand without the decorative carving that fills other Angkor temples. The result is a stark, powerful pyramid with steep stairs on every side. It is a temple that many guests remember because the climb to the top rewards you with a quiet view over the forest.
The temple is close to the main circuit, and a tuk-tuk makes it easy to stop here between the larger sites. Your driver or guide explains why the building was left incomplete and how it compares with the temples built in the following centuries.
Ta Prohm, the temple in the jungle
Ta Prohm is the temple everyone imagines when they think of Angkor in the forest. The conservators decided to leave it largely as it was found, so giant silk-cotton and strangler fig trees spread their roots over walls and doorways, holding some of the stones together and pushing others apart.
Walking through its courtyards and corridors is an atmospheric experience, and the best time to visit is early or late in the day, when tour groups are fewer. A private tuk-tuk helps you choose that moment, and your guide shows the best angles for photographs and explains the work of keeping the trees and temple in balance. Allow around an hour here.
Banteay Kdei and your private tuk-tuk day
Banteay Kdei, a stop on the driver-only sunrise option, is a large Buddhist monastery temple with long, low galleries, carved doorways and quiet courtyards, and it is usually calmer than the better-known sites. If your group has time, ask about adding a quiet stop like this.
The day as a whole is paced by you. Your driver collects you at the hotel, supplies chilled bottled water and drives between the temples in an open vehicle, so you feel the breeze and see the forest. The Angkor Archaeological Park entry pass is not included, and our team will tell you how to arrange it. Remember to cover shoulders and knees for the temples.
