Kulen Mountain Beng Mealea and Tonle Sap Day Tour Siem Reap

Kulen Mountain, the sacred plateau

Phnom Kulen is a forested sandstone plateau north-east of Siem Reap and a pilgrimage place for Cambodians. Here in 802 King Jayavarman II declared himself universal ruler, an event usually seen as the beginning of the Khmer Empire. Your guide sets the scene before you reach the top, explaining why the mountain matters to Cambodians today.

At the summit you visit Wat Preah Ang Thom, a monastery with a huge reclining Buddha carved into a boulder, and walk to the River of a Thousand Lingas, where carved symbols lie beneath shallow water. The Kulen Mountain tour also includes time at the waterfall, so wear shoes with a good grip and bring a swimsuit or towel if you would like to cool off.

Lunch is served as a picnic beside the waterfall and is included in this tour along with seasonal fruit and unlimited bottled water. A vegetarian option is available if you tell us in advance, but a fully vegan meal is not guaranteed.

This is the pause in the middle of the day, so most travellers swim, shower under the falls or simply rest in the shade. The flow of water is strongest in the rainy season and gentler in the dry months, and weekends are busier with local families. You should eat breakfast before pickup because the day is long.

Beng Mealea, the temple swallowed by the forest

Beng Mealea lies about 65 kilometres east of Siem Reap and was built in the twelfth century, around the same time as Angkor Wat, and on a similar plan. Unlike the restored temples, it has been left largely as found, with fallen galleries, towers wrapped in roots and moss growing on the sandstone. Many visitors call it the most atmospheric temple near Siem Reap, and a Beng Mealea tour is the best way to see it without a long drive of your own.

Wooden walkways and stone paths help you move through the ruins with your guide, and you can climb over blocks in some areas. Entrance requires a Beng Mealea pass, or a valid Angkor pass, which is not included in the tour price. Cover your shoulders and knees, and take care on loose stones.

Kampong Phluk and Tonle Sap Lake

The last part of the day is on the water. Kampong Phluk is a fishing village on the edge of Tonle Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, where houses stand on tall stilts so the water can rise beneath them in the rainy season. A boat takes you through the flooded forest and toward the open lake, past fishing nets and floating homes.

The Tonle Sap Lake pass with the boat ride is not included in the tour price and is paid separately. The village and the lake look different by season, with high water and the flooded forest from roughly August to November, and a lower, more open landscape later, so ask your guide what to expect on your date.

Planning the day: passes, timing and what to wear

This is a long day of about 10 hours, with driving between the three areas, so it suits active travellers who like variety. The Kulen Mountain pass, the Beng Mealea pass (or a valid Angkor pass) and the Tonle Sap Lake pass are paid separately; your guide explains how and where to buy each, and you should carry cash for them.

For clothing, cover your shoulders and knees at temples and the monastery, and avoid shorts and sleeveless tops. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel and a camera. Soft drinks are not included, but bottled water is unlimited.
