Full Description

Omiš and the mouth of the Cetina

Omiš is a small town twenty-five kilometres south-east of Split where the Cetina River breaks through the coastal mountains and empties into the Adriatic. Its old town is a knot of stone lanes squeezed between the river, the sea and a cliff, watched over by the Mirabela fortress above the roofs and the Starigrad fortress high on the ridge. In the twelfth and thirteenth centuries Omiš was the base of the pirates of the Cetina, who used the river mouth as a hiding place for their fast boats and extracted tolls from Venetian and papal ships, a history still celebrated in the town today.

The tour starts at our departure office on Josipa Pupačića street in the town centre, a short walk from the river mouth, where a lounge with restrooms is open before you board. Anyone looking for Omiš things to do beyond the beach usually starts with this boat trip.

The Cetina Canyon by boat

The Cetina is a hundred-kilometre karst river that rises near the Dinara mountains and cuts its final stretch through a canyon whose walls climb to several hundred metres above the water. From the boat the cliffs seem to close in on both sides, with caves, ledges and fig trees clinging to the rock, while the river itself runs green and calm, deep enough for swimmers and lined with reeds and willows in the quieter bends. Kingfishers, herons and the occasional eagle appear, and in summer rafts and kayaks drift past on their way down from the rapids upstream.

The captain cruises slowly so that you can photograph the walls and the reflections, and the sunroof keeps the sun off while the sides stay open to the breeze. A Cetina Canyon boat tour from Omiš covers the most dramatic lower section of the gorge in about forty-five minutes each way.

The riverside nature park and the old mills

About six kilometres upstream the canyon widens into a green pocket of meadows, plane trees and springs known as the nature park area, where the old mills of Radmanove Mlinice have stood on the riverbank since the eighteenth century. The mills once ground grain for the villages of the Poljica region, and the stone buildings, the mill race and the footbridges are now a shaded riverside park with picnic lawns, children's play areas and paths along the water. The boat ties up here and you have time to walk, photograph the canyon walls from below and dip your feet in the cold, clear river.

This stop is the best part of the trip for families, and it answers the common question of how to get to Radmanove Mlinice without a car. Snacks and drinks can be bought before departure in Omiš, as no food is included.

The return cruise and Omiš beach

The return follows the same water in the opposite light, and many passengers find the downstream views the better ones, with the canyon opening ahead to frame the fortresses of Omiš and finally the sea. The last stretch passes under the road bridge, past the town's riverside promenade and the small marina, before the boat moors again near the river mouth about two hours after departure. Our captain gives a short briefing before boarding and remains available for questions during the cruise, though there is no separate guide on board.

After the tour the long sandy beach of Omiš lies just across the river mouth, and the lanes of the old town, the market and the climb to the Mirabela fortress are a few minutes away. The 15:00 departure returns in time for an evening on the waterfront.
