Full Description
Omis and the mouth of the Cetina River
Omis sits where the Cetina River breaks through the coastal mountains and meets the Adriatic, about half an hour south of Split. The old town is a knot of stone lanes squeezed between the river mouth and a sheer cliff, crowned by the Mirabela fortress and, higher up, the Fortica fort that once guarded the Omis pirates who ruled this stretch of coast in the Middle Ages. The long sandy beach beside the river mouth is one of the best on the Dalmatian coast for families.
Most visitors ask what to do in Omis beyond the beach, and the answer is the river: Omis is the rafting capital of Dalmatia, and the Cetina canyon begins just a few kilometres inland from the town. Our rafting base is about 15 minutes away by car, so a morning on the water fits easily into a day in Omis, with the old town and the beach waiting for the afternoon.
The Cetina River canyon
The Cetina rises in the Dinaric mountains near Vrlika and flows about 100 kilometres through karst country before reaching the sea at Omis. In its lower course it cuts a deep gorge with limestone walls rising hundreds of metres, waterfalls trickling down the rock and thick green vegetation along the banks. The water is a striking turquoise because it is filtered through the limestone, and it stays cool even in August, which is exactly why rafting on the Cetina is the most popular activity in this part of Croatia.
The 11 km rafting section alternates between glassy still stretches, where you drift and look up at the cliffs, and short lively rapids of grade 2 and 3 on a scale of 1 to 5. That rhythm is what makes the Cetina canyon rafting suitable for first-timers: there is time to relax, then a burst of paddling, then calm again. In high summer the flow is gentle and the trip is more about scenery and swimming than white water.
The rafting start at Podašpilje and the safety briefing
The default option begins at the rafting base in the village of Podašpilje, in the hills above Omis. You leave your car at our finish point, where parking is free, and board a van for the 15-minute drive up the canyon road to the start of the rafting section. There the skipper fits everyone with a life jacket, helmet and paddle, and hands out neoprene wetsuits on cold or rainy days.
The safety briefing takes about five minutes and covers how to hold the paddle, the commands the skipper calls and what to do if someone slips into the water. Rafts carry a small group plus a licensed skipper who steers from the back, so you never need rafting experience. Children from the age of 4 can join, and anyone who prefers not to jump or enter the cave can simply swim and sunbathe at those stops.
The hidden cave with a spring-water pool
Roughly halfway down the route the raft pulls in at what we call the secret stop. Here a narrow opening in the canyon wall leads into a hidden cave fed by an underground spring. Inside, a pool of cold, perfectly clear water waits beneath the rock, and the brave jump straight into it from a ledge. The contrast between the warm river outside and the icy pool inside is the moment most guests talk about afterwards.
Cave exploring on the Cetina is optional and takes about ten minutes, with the skipper leading the way and showing the safest spots. It is also a good photo stop: the light filtering through the cave mouth and the green water of the river make a striking picture. Searches for a Cetina cave rafting trip usually mean this stop, which is included in every departure.
Cliff jumping and the swimming stop
Further downstream the raft stops below a rock about 5 metres high, the cliff-jumping spot. The skipper checks the water depth and shows where to jump, then anyone who wants to can climb up and leap into the deep green pool. Omis cliff jumping is entirely optional; many guests prefer to float in the river, sunbathe on the rocks or take photos of the jumpers against the canyon wall.
There is also a dedicated swimming stop where the water is calm and deep, with small waterfalls sparkling on the cliffs around you. Swimming in the Cetina is one of the most refreshing things to do near Split in summer because the river stays cold while the coast bakes. The final short rafting stretch brings you back to the finish point where your car is parked, about 3 hours after you set off.
