Mostar and the Old Bridge
Mostar is the main stop of the day and about two and a half hours are set aside for it. The Old Bridge, Stari Most, was built in 1566 in the Ottoman period, destroyed in 1993 and rebuilt in 2004, and it is now on the UNESCO list. Around it, the old town has cobbled lanes, craft shops and cafes on the river.
You can visit the mosque of the old town, see a traditional Ottoman house and buy handmade copper goods in the bazaar. Many visitors ask if Mostar is worth visiting, and the answer is yes for its atmosphere and its mix of cultures. In summer, local divers jump from the bridge, so keep an eye out. Medjugorje
Medjugorje is a village in Herzegovina that became a pilgrimage destination after reports of apparitions of Our Lady in 1981. About an hour and a half is set aside here. It is a place of prayer, so dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and keep your voice low in the church. You do not need to be Catholic to visit; many people come simply to see the village and its atmosphere. The stop also has shops and cafes.
Pocitelj
Pocitelj is a small fortified village on the slopes above the Neretva River, a place of stone houses, a mosque with a domed roof and a hilltop tower that was built as part of the Ottoman defences. It is one of the best-preserved historic settlements in the country.
The stop is short, about half an hour, but it is enough to climb the stone steps, look over the valley and take photos. Wear shoes with good grip because the paths are steep and can be slippery. The village is a good example of how Herzegovina looked in the Ottoman period.
The road to Mostar and group options
The drive follows the Adriatic coast through Neum, the only Bosnian town on the sea, then continues through the Neretva delta, a green area of fruit farms and waterways. You cross two borders, so carry your passport. The trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar takes around three hours.
