Full Description

Split pick-up points and the coast road to the canyon

The day begins in Split, the largest city in Dalmatia, where our air-conditioned vehicle collects you at 09:25 from the pick-up point you choose at checkout: there are five, including points near the Lazareti walls by the old town, on Papandopulova and Pojišanska streets in the residential districts and at the Stobreč junction on the way out of town. No hotel pickup is needed, because one of the points is always within a short walk.

The drive follows the Adriatic coast road south past the beaches of Podstrana and Dugi Rat and through Omiš, where the Cetina River reaches the sea beneath a wall of cliffs, then turns inland up the canyon to the village of Kučiće. It takes about 50 minutes and is a scenic ride in itself. Rafting near Split with a transfer like this is the most popular way to do it, because the canyon has no public transport.

The Cetina canyon at Kučiće

The rafting base sits by the river at Kučiće, a hamlet deep in the Cetina canyon roughly 10 kilometres upstream from Omiš. Here the river runs between limestone walls several hundred metres high, with thick vegetation, waterfalls seeping from the rock and water so clear you can count the stones on the bottom. The Cetina is a karst river, filtered through the limestone of the Dalmatian hinterland, and it stays cold and clean all summer.

At the base your skipper helps you choose a helmet, paddle and life jacket, plus a wetsuit and shoes in cold weather, and gives a ten-minute safety talk on the riverbank. Dress as if you were going to the beach; everything else is provided. In summer the Cetina is not an extreme river, which is why Cetina canyon rafting works for first-timers and families.

Rapids, waterfalls and small caves on the 9 km route

The route covers about 9 kilometres and takes around 2.5 hours on the water, broken into four stretches of roughly 30 minutes with stops between them. The rapids are grade 2 and 3 on a scale of 1 to 5: short, lively runs where the skipper calls the strokes and the raft bounces through, followed by long calm reaches where you can rest the paddle and look up at the cliffs.

Along the way the canyon narrows and the walls close in, with waterfalls dropping into the river and small caves at water level that the raft can nose into. The skipper points out the best of them and stops for photos where the scenery is most dramatic. This mix of white water and quiet green pools is what makes Cetina River rafting from Split so often described as the best adventure day in Dalmatia.

Cliff jumping and the swimming stop

About two-thirds of the way down, the raft pulls in below a set of rocks that rise up to 5 metres above a deep pool. This is the Split cliff jumping spot everyone searches for: the skipper checks the depth, shows the safe take-off points and anyone who wants to can climb up and jump. It is entirely optional, and plenty of guests stay in the water below to watch and take photos.

A separate swimming stop follows in a calm, deep section where the river is at its clearest and coolest. Ten minutes of floating in the Cetina on a hot day is the perfect reward for the paddling, and the life jacket means even weaker swimmers can enjoy it. Then the final stretch of rapids carries you towards the finish.

The finish beach and the ride back to Split

The rafting ends on a small pebble beach by the river, where you can change into dry clothes and enjoy the soft drink that is included while the rafts are pulled out. It is a relaxed end to the trip, with time to compare photos and dry off in the sun before the vehicle leaves.

The transfer then takes you back down the canyon, through Omiš and along the coast to Split, dropping you at the same pick-up points, about 6 hours after you set off. You are back in the city by mid-afternoon, with the rest of the day free for the Riva and the old town.
