The Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel

According to tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared to Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, who built the first sanctuary on the rock in 708. Benedictine monks settled here in 966, and over the next five centuries they raised the abbey church on the summit and the Gothic complex known as La Merveille, the Marvel, whose cloister and refectory seem to hang over the sea.

The visit climbs through the abbey church, the cloister with its double row of slender columns, the Knights' Hall and the great wheel once used to haul supplies up the walls. The Medieval Village and the Ramparts

Below the abbey, the Grande Rue winds up the rock past half-timbered houses, small museums, the parish church of Saint-Pierre and shops selling Normandy biscuits. This single street is the only way up, so it gets busy in the middle of the day; side stairways lead off it to quieter corners and viewpoints.

Walk part of the ramparts, built mainly in the 15th century, for wide views across the sands and the bay. Around the base you will see the King's Gate and the old defensive towers that withstood English sieges. Allow at least an hour of free time in the village after the abbey visit to enjoy it at your own pace.

The Bay and the Famous Tides

Mont Saint-Michel stands at the mouth of the Couesnon river in a bay with some of the strongest tides in continental Europe; at high spring tides the difference between low and high water can reach about 14 metres. The sea advances quickly across the flat sands, and on the highest tides the Mount becomes an island again.

In 2014 the old causeway was replaced by a light bridge so the water can flow freely around the rock. From the mainland visitor area, a free shuttle or a walk of about 45 minutes brings you to the Mount. The view of the silhouette from the bridge, especially in the afternoon light, is one of the best photos of any Normandy day trip.

How to Get to Mont Saint-Michel from Paris

Mont Saint-Michel is about 360 kilometres west of Paris, on the border of Normandy and Brittany. Travelling by train means a high-speed train to Rennes and a connecting bus, which can be hard to time in one day. Our coach leaves central Paris at 07:15 and takes around four and a half hours each way, with a comfort stop on the road.

The Abbey is open every day except a few public holidays, and Mont Saint-Michel opening hours are longer in summer than in winter. The best time to visit Mont Saint-Michel is spring or autumn, when crowds are lighter; in summer, arriving by coach saves you the stress of full car parks. Expect to be back in Paris in the late evening.
