Full Description

Sainte-Chapelle: the stained-glass royal chapel

Sainte-Chapelle was built between 1242 and 1248 for King Louis IX to house relics that included the Crown of Thorns. The lower chapel, low and painted with stars, served the palace staff, while the royal family climbed to the upper chapel, where fifteen soaring windows fill the space with almost 1,100 scenes from the Bible. On a sunny morning the room is flooded with red and blue light, and many travellers say it is the highlight of their Paris trip.

If you are planning a Sainte-Chapelle visit, choose your time slot carefully: mid-morning is popular, and late afternoon light shows the west rose window well. The chapel is small, so allow around 30 to 45 minutes to look at the glass panel by panel, and step outside a moment to take in the delicate spire.

The Conciergerie: from palace to prison

The Conciergerie was once part of the royal palace of the Capetian kings. From the fourteenth century it became a court and a prison, and during the Terror of 1793 and 1794 it held thousands of prisoners awaiting the Revolutionary Tribunal. The Salle des Gens d'Armes, a vast Gothic hall, is one of the biggest medieval rooms in Europe and is a fine start to the visit.

You then follow the prisoners' corridor to the recreated cells and the cell of Marie-Antoinette, who was held here in 1793 before her execution. A Conciergerie visit takes about an hour, and a digital guide with 3D reconstructions may be offered at the entrance, depending on the day. Your ticket includes the English booklet only, so pick up a printed copy in the language you prefer.

The Palais de la Cité and the Île de la Cité

Both monuments sit inside the same complex, the Palais de la Cité, the seat of French kings until the fourteenth century and still the seat of the Paris courts today. That is why you go through a security check on the Boulevard du Palais side and may be asked for ID. The two entrances are close, so the combined ticket is easy to use in one morning or afternoon.

This corner of the Île de la Cité is a good place for a half day: Notre-Dame Cathedral is a five-minute walk away, the flower market on Place Louis Lépine is nearby, and the quays of the Seine lead to the Pont Neuf. For the best Sainte-Chapelle and Conciergerie tour, start with the chapel at your booked time and continue to the Conciergerie afterwards.

Which ticket to choose: EU/EEA or non-EU/EEA

The site charges different categories for visitors who live in the European Economic Area for more than four months and for those who do not. The two options on this page reflect that split, so choose the one that matches your passport, ID or residence permit, which may be checked at the door.

Visitors under 18, and EU citizens under 26, enter free but need a free ticket issued on site, so they do not book here. The monuments close on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, and last entry is about half an hour before closing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

How much does the Sainte-Chapelle and Conciergerie ticket cost?

It depends on the option you choose and the date. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for each option, adult and child.

Is hotel pickup included?

No. It is an entrance ticket only. The nearest metro stops are Cité and Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, a short walk from both monuments.

How long does the visit take?

Plan around two to two and a half hours in total: about 45 minutes at Sainte-Chapelle and about an hour at the Conciergerie, plus security.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, for curious children who can climb stairs. Under-18s enter with a free ticket issued on site, so they do not use this booking.

What should I wear and bring?

Comfortable shoes and a light layer, because the stone interiors are cool. Bring photo ID, your voucher and small bags only.

Can I book for today or tomorrow?

Often yes, depending on availability. Pick the date and Sainte-Chapelle time slot in the booking panel; the Conciergerie visit is the same day.

What is the difference between the two options?

The options are the same monuments; only the ticket category changes. Choose non-EU/EEA if you do not live in the EU or EEA, and EU/EEA if you are a citizen or a resident of more than four months.

Is Sainte-Chapelle worth visiting?

Yes. Its upper chapel is one of the most striking rooms in Paris, and the combined ticket adds the Conciergerie's history at no extra planning.

How do I get to the Conciergerie?

Take metro line 4 to Cité or lines 4 and 10 to Saint-Michel Notre-Dame. Both monuments are entered from Boulevard du Palais.
