Full Description

The Lauragais countryside between Toulouse and Carcassonne

How to get to Carcassonne from Toulouse is the first question for most visitors, and the coach makes it simple: the drive of about 95 kilometres takes around an hour and a quarter along the motorway through the Lauragais. This gently rolling land of wheat fields, sunflowers and hilltop villages was known in the Renaissance as the land of plenty, because its woad crops produced the pastel blue dye that made Toulouse merchants rich.

Along the way the audio guide tells the story of the region, from the Cathars of the Middle Ages to the building of the Canal du Midi, whose line of plane trees you glimpse beside the road. Watch for old windmills on the ridges and for Castelnaudary, the market town famous across France for its slow-cooked bean stew, before the towers of Carcassonne appear on the horizon.

La Cité de Carcassonne and its double ramparts

La Cité is the fortified medieval town on the hill above the Aude, and it is the reason everyone comes. Its double ring of walls stretches about 3 kilometres, with 52 towers, barbicans and two main gates, the Porte Narbonnaise facing east and the Porte d'Aude facing the river. The site was fortified by the Romans, strengthened by the Trencavel viscounts and then by the French crown after the siege of 1209, and restored in the 19th century. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Entering La Cité itself is free, so your visit begins the moment you cross the drawbridge of the Porte Narbonnaise. Walk the lices, the grassy corridor between the inner and outer walls, for the best views of the towers. Is Carcassonne worth visiting? Standing between those two walls, few travellers have any doubt.

The Château Comtal and the ramparts walk

Inside La Cité stands the Château Comtal, the castle of the counts, built in the 12th century by the Trencavel family and protected by its own moat, wooden hoardings and towers. It houses a small museum of Romanesque and Gothic sculpture and is the starting point of the guided circuit along the top of the ramparts, which offers wide views over the Aude valley, the lower town and, on clear days, the Pyrenees.

Château Comtal tickets are not included in this excursion and are bought on site at the entrance, which also gives access to the ramparts walk. Château Comtal opening hours run daily from morning to early evening, longer in summer. Allow about an hour and a half for the castle and the walls, and go soon after arrival to avoid the midday queues in high season.

The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire

At the southern edge of La Cité rises the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire, a church that tells the story of two architectural ages. Its nave is Romanesque, heavy and dark, while the transept and choir, rebuilt around 1300 in the Gothic style, are flooded with light from tall stained-glass windows and two great rose windows, considered among the finest medieval glass in the south of France.

Entry to the basilica is free, and a visit of about twenty minutes is enough to admire the glass and the carved statues around the choir. Step out afterwards to the small square in front, where the walls of La Cité frame a peaceful corner away from the busiest lanes. The audio guide on the coach gives the background before you arrive, so you know what to look for inside.

Lanes, squares and views of the lower town

Between the castle and the basilica, La Cité is a maze of cobbled lanes, small squares such as the Place Marcou, craft shops and restaurants where most travellers take their lunch break. Lunch is not included in the excursion, which leaves you free to choose a quick crêpe or a long sit-down meal of local cassoulet. The Place du Château and the Rue Cros-Mayrevieille are the liveliest streets.

From the western walls near the Porte d'Aude you see the 14th-century Pont Vieux crossing the river towards the Bastide Saint-Louis, the lower town founded in the 13th century on a grid plan. The best time to visit Carcassonne is in spring or early autumn, when the light is soft and the lanes are calmer; in July and August arrive early and keep to the shade of the walls.
