Overview
This Elephanta Caves tour is the most complete shared way to visit Mumbai's UNESCO-listed rock-cut temples. A shared air-conditioned car collects you from your hotel and takes you to the Gateway of India, where you board the ferry across Mumbai Harbour to Elephanta Island, about an hour each way. On the island you ride the little toy train along the jetty, climb the stepped path to the caves and enter with skip-the-line access, while an expert guide explains the sixth-century sculptures of Shiva, including the great three-headed Trimurti. Ferry tickets, cave entrance, water on arrival and hotel transfers are included. The day lasts about six hours; other options start at the Gateway or are fully private, even by speedboat.

Full Description
Gateway of India and the ferry across Mumbai Harbour
Every trip to Elephanta starts at the Gateway of India, the basalt arch on the Colaba waterfront completed in 1924. Ferries leave from the jetties beside it throughout the day, and many visitors ask how to get to Elephanta Caves without wasting time in the ticket queue. On this tour our car brings you to the Gateway, and your guide handles the return ferry tickets so you simply board.
The crossing covers about ten kilometres and takes roughly an hour each way. From the deck you see the Gateway and the domed waterfront hotel shrink behind you, then pass container ships, naval vessels at anchor and the busy cranes of the port. Sit on the upper deck for the best views and the sea breeze. In the monsoon months the harbour can be rough, so crossings may be delayed or suspended.
Elephanta Island: toy train, stairway and villages
Elephanta Island is known locally as Gharapuri, often translated as the city of caves. The Portuguese, who controlled the area in the sixteenth century, named it after a huge stone elephant that stood near the landing place; the statue was moved to the mainland in the nineteenth century and now stands in the Jijamata Udyan gardens at Byculla. Three small villages still occupy the island today.
From the jetty, the little toy train included in this tour carries you along the long pier to the foot of the hill. From there a stepped path of about 120 steps, lined with souvenir and snack stalls, climbs to the caves; take your time, as it can be hot. Monkeys are bold here, so keep food and loose items out of sight. Porters with carrying chairs wait at the bottom for anyone who prefers not to climb.
The Great Cave and the Trimurti
The highlight of any Elephanta Caves tour is Cave 1, the Great Cave, carved out of solid basalt in about the sixth century and dedicated to Shiva. Its pillared hall covers roughly the area of a large temple, and around its walls stand monumental relief panels. At the far end, the Trimurti Sadashiva, about six metres tall, shows Shiva with three faces: the calm creator in the centre, the fierce destroyer on one side and the gentle, feminine aspect on the other.
Your guide explains the other panels one by one: Shiva as half man and half woman, Shiva receiving the river Ganga in his hair, the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, the cosmic dance, and the demon Ravana shaking Mount Kailash. A square shrine with a lingam stands in the hall, guarded by giant door-keepers. UNESCO listed the caves as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Allow about an hour here.
The smaller caves, Buddhist remains and Cannon Hill
Beyond the Great Cave, a group of smaller Hindu caves cut into the same hill shows unfinished halls and shrines, where you can see how the sculptors worked into the rock. On the eastern hill stand two Buddhist caves and the remains of a brick stupa, which are older than the Hindu temples and show that the island was a religious centre for many centuries.
A path also leads up to Cannon Hill, where two large British-era guns still point out over the harbour, with wide views back towards the Mumbai skyline. With an expert guide, the visit to the caves lasts about an hour and a half, after which you have some free time on the island before walking down to the jetty for the ferry back to the Gateway of India.
Elephanta Caves opening hours, tickets and best time
The Elephanta Caves opening hours are roughly 09:00 to 17:30, and the site and its ferries are closed every Monday. Elephanta Caves tickets for foreign visitors are separate from the ferry fare, but on this tour both are included and you use skip-the-line entry at the cave gate. The last ferries back leave in the late afternoon, which is why the tour start times run from 07:30 to 12:00.
The best time to visit Elephanta is from November to February, when the sea is calm and the climb is cooler. March to May is hot and humid, so morning departures are more comfortable. From June to September heavy monsoon rain, wind and high tides can delay or cancel ferries; if a crossing is cancelled we offer another date or a refund. Avoid weekends and public holidays if you want quieter caves.
