Full Description

The Taj Mahal mausoleum

The Taj Mahal was built between about 1632 and 1653 by a Mughal emperor as a mausoleum for his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, whose name it is believed to echo. Raised on a high marble platform beside the Yamuna, the tomb is faced with white Makrana marble inlaid with semi-precious stones in floral patterns, framed by flowing Quranic calligraphy and crowned by a great onion dome about 73 metres high. Four slender minarets lean very slightly outwards.

Inside, a softly lit octagonal chamber holds the decorative cenotaphs behind a carved marble screen, while the actual graves lie in a crypt below. Your guide explains the symbolism, the optical tricks that make the lettering look uniform from below and how the marble changes colour from pink at dawn to white at midday. Is the Taj Mahal worth visiting? Few buildings on earth match it in person.

The Great Gate, gardens and mosque

You enter the complex through the Great Gate, a monumental red sandstone portal inscribed with verses, which frames your first view of the mausoleum. Beyond it stretches the classic Mughal charbagh garden, divided into four parts by water channels, with the long reflecting pool where the most famous photos of the Taj are taken.

On either side of the tomb stand two matching red sandstone buildings: on the west a working mosque, which is why the Taj Mahal closes to tourists on Fridays, and on the east its mirror image, built for symmetry. With a private guide you can time your photos well, find quieter angles along the garden paths and avoid wasting time in queues, which is the main advantage of a Taj Mahal tour with express entry tickets.

Visiting the Taj Mahal: opening hours and sunrise

Taj Mahal opening hours run from about 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, every day except Friday. The best time to visit the Taj Mahal is at sunrise, when the marble glows pink and the crowds and heat are lowest; the cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable season, while April to June is very hot.

Security at the gates is strict: food, tobacco, lighters, tripods, drones and large bags are not allowed, so travel light with a phone or camera, water and your passport. Shoe covers are provided to protect the marble platform. Our driver drops you close to the entrance gate, and your guide handles the tickets, so you can focus on the monument for around two hours.

Agra Fort

About 2.5 kilometres upstream stands Agra Fort, a massive red sandstone citadel on the bank of the Yamuna and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, the same year as the Taj. Rebuilt from 1565 under the third Mughal emperor, it served as the main residence of the dynasty, and later rulers added elegant white marble palaces inside its walls, which run for about 2.5 kilometres.

You enter through the Amar Singh Gate and visit the Hall of Public Audience, the Hall of Private Audience, the Khas Mahal and the Jahangiri Mahal palace. The highlight is the octagonal Musamman Burj tower, where the emperor who built the Taj spent his final years confined, looking across the river at his wife's tomb. Agra Fort is open every day, including Fridays.

Agra and how to get there

Agra lies in the state of Uttar Pradesh on the Yamuna River, about 230 kilometres south-east of Delhi. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire for long periods in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and besides the Taj and the fort it is known for its marble inlay workshops and the Mehtab Bagh garden across the river, with sunset views of the Taj.

How to get to Agra from Delhi: fast trains reach Agra Cantonment station in around two hours, and the Yamuna Expressway takes about three to four hours by road. Because this private tour includes pickup from your hotel, Agra airport or Agra railway station, you can arrive by early train and start straight away, making a Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi easy to organise.
