Agra
Plan Agra with Haqqi Tours: day tours, private airport transfers, attraction tickets and packages, run by our own team and confirmed on WhatsApp in Arabic or English.
Step out of your hotel in Agra before dawn and the city is still wrapped in a soft haze. Rickshaws rattle through quiet lanes, a call to prayer drifts from a nearby mosque, and at the gates of the Taj Mahal small groups wait in the half-light. Then the gardens open, and the white marble dome appears beyond the long reflecting pool, turning from pale grey to rose and gold as the sun rises over the Yamuna.

Agra at first sight
Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, was a great capital of the Mughal Empire, and it still holds three of its finest monuments: the Taj Mahal, the red sandstone Agra Fort and the abandoned royal city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built by a Mughal emperor in memory of his beloved wife, the Taj Mahal is perhaps the most famous monument to love in the world, and no journey through northern India feels complete without it.
Why include Agra in your itinerary?
- The Taj Mahal at sunrise. Seeing the great white mausoleum emerge from the morning mist, its marble shifting from pearl to pink to gold, is one of the most moving travel moments on earth, and Agra lets you be there at the very first light, before the heat and the crowds.
- Mughal grandeur on every side. Beyond the Taj, Agra Fort's palaces, audience halls and marble pavilions overlook the river, the delicate tomb known as the Baby Taj glows with inlaid stone, and the red sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri stands almost untouched an hour away.
- Craft, flavour and a living Mughal heritage. Agra's artisans still practise the art of marble inlay used in the Taj, its bazaars overflow with textiles and leatherwork, and its kitchens serve rich Mughlai biryanis, kebabs and the city's famous sweet, petha, with halal food easy to find across the city.
Signature experiences in Agra
Sunrise at the Taj Mahal
Entering the Taj Mahal as the gates open at sunrise is unforgettable: cool air, soft pastel light on the marble and calm gardens before the day groups arrive. A good guide explains the symmetry, the Quranic calligraphy, the inlaid flowers of precious stone and the story behind the monument. Our guided sunrise visits handle tickets and entry, so you can walk straight in and enjoy the moment.
Agra Fort and Its Palaces
On a bend of the Yamuna, the massive red sandstone walls of Agra Fort enclose palaces, mosques and audience halls built by successive Mughal rulers. Walk through the Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas, the white marble pavilions and the Jahangiri Mahal, and look out from the terraces to the Taj Mahal across the river. Our private guided tours combine the fort and the Taj with priority entry.
The Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh at Sunset
Across the river, the tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the Baby Taj, is a jewel box of white marble covered in intricate inlay, quiet and rarely crowded. Nearby, the Mehtab Bagh gardens face the Taj Mahal directly from the opposite bank, and at sunset the monument glows above the water. A private car with driver arranged by our team makes this a perfect afternoon.
Day Trip to Fatehpur Sikri
About an hour west of Agra, Fatehpur Sikri is a royal city of red sandstone built in the sixteenth century and abandoned soon after, now remarkably preserved. Explore its palaces, courtyards and the great mosque with the soaring Buland Darwaza gate, and the white marble shrine of a revered Sufi saint, still visited by pilgrims. It is best visited with a guide and private transport arranged by our team.
Marble Inlay, Bazaars and Mughlai Food
Agra's craftsmen still carve and inlay marble with semi-precious stones in the same technique as the Taj, and watching them work is fascinating. The old city around the Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar is a maze of fabrics, spices and jewellery, while Sadar Bazaar is easier and calmer. Taste kebabs, biryani and petha, and let our local guides lead you to honest workshops.
Neighbourhoods and quarters to know in Agra
Taj Ganj
Taj Ganj is the old neighbourhood of lanes right beside the south and east gates of the Taj Mahal, packed with guesthouses, small hotels, rooftop cafés with Taj views and many halal eateries. It is ideal for travellers who want to walk to the monument at sunrise. It is lively and atmospheric, with persistent touts, so a firm, polite reply works best.
Fatehabad Road
Fatehabad Road, a short drive from the Taj's east gate, is lined with Agra's large international-style hotels, many with gardens, pools and Taj views from upper floors. It is the most comfortable area for families and first-time visitors, with restaurants, shops and easy access to both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. The atmosphere is calmer and well organised.
Sadar Bazaar and the Cantonment
Around Sadar Bazaar and the leafy cantonment district, close to Agra Cantt railway station, you find mid-range hotels, shops, sweet shops and restaurants in a tidier, less hectic setting. It is convenient for travellers arriving by train, with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort a short drive away, and the evening market is pleasant for a stroll.
The Old City around Agra Fort
North and west of Agra Fort, the old city around the Jama Masjid and Kinari Bazaar is busy, crowded and full of character, with markets, mosques and traditional food stalls. There are few hotels here, so it is best explored on a guided visit rather than as a base. It shows Agra's daily life far from the polished monument zone.
How long to stay in Agra and how to pair it
Recommended stay
We recommend two nights in Agra. One day for the Taj Mahal at sunrise and Agra Fort, with the Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh at sunset, and a second for Fatehpur Sikri, the bazaars and a slower pace. With three nights, add a day trip to the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan or a second visit to the Taj at a different light.
How to pair it
Agra pairs naturally with Delhi, under two hours by fast express train or about three and a half hours by expressway, and with Jaipur, about four to five hours by road, forming the classic Golden Triangle. A seven-day journey combines Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. In ten days, add the lakes and palaces of Udaipur. A fourteen-day trip can continue to the sacred river city of Varanasi or the tiger reserve of Ranthambore.
Best time to visit Agra and the rhythm of the day
Best months
The best time to visit Agra is from October to March, when days are pleasant and mostly sunny and evenings are cool. December and January can bring dense morning fog that hides the Taj at sunrise, so plan a flexible day. From April to June temperatures are extremely high, and the monsoon from July to September brings humidity and rain, though the gardens turn green and crowds are lighter.
The daily rhythm
Agra's day starts before dawn with the Taj Mahal at sunrise, the most beautiful and least crowded hour. Late morning is for Agra Fort, then lunch and a rest at the hotel through the midday heat. Late afternoon brings the Baby Taj and sunset at Mehtab Bagh across the river, and evenings end with a Mughlai dinner. Remember that the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday.
On-the-ground logistics in Agra
Arrival
Agra has a small domestic airport (AGR) with limited flights, so most international travellers land at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) and continue by road along the Yamuna Expressway, about three and a half to four hours. Fast express trains from Delhi reach Agra Cantt station in under two hours. We arrange private transfers from Delhi airport, Agra airport or Agra Cantt station straight to your hotel.
Getting around
Agra's monuments are spread out, so walking between them is not practical except within Taj Ganj. Auto rickshaws and taxis are everywhere, but agree the fare first and expect some persistence. Near the Taj Mahal only electric vehicles are allowed in the protected zone. A private car with driver arranged by our team is the most comfortable way to combine the Taj, the fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
Local etiquette tip
Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, especially at mosques and the Sufi shrine at Fatehpur Sikri, where a head covering is welcome. Shoes must be removed or covered on the Taj Mahal's marble platform. Security at the Taj is strict: food, tripods and large bags are not allowed. Ask before photographing people, and a respectful namaste or salaam is always appreciated.

Can Agra be done as a day trip, or does it need an overnight stay?

Dress modestly in Agra, with light, loose clothing covering shoulders and knees, which is respectful and comfortable in the heat. Women may like a scarf for mosques and the shrine at Fatehpur Sikri.
