Full Description
Dam Square, the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk
Amsterdam was born on this spot around 1270, when a dam was built across the Amstel river, giving the city its name. Today Dam Square is the busy heart of the centre, and the tour begins on the steps of the National Monument, the white stone obelisk unveiled in 1956 in memory of the victims of the Second World War.
Facing it stands the Royal Palace, built between 1648 and 1665 as the city hall at the height of the Golden Age and later converted into a royal residence; it is still used for state visits and receptions. Beside it rises the Nieuwe Kerk, a Gothic church from the 15th century where Dutch monarchs are inaugurated. Your guide explains how this square reflects seven centuries of Amsterdam history.
The old stock exchange, the former post office and Torensluis
A few steps from Dam Square stands the old Beurs, the brick stock exchange completed in 1903, whose clean lines and fine craftsmanship made it a landmark of early modern Dutch architecture. Behind the Royal Palace, the grand neo-Gothic former main post office of 1899, with its towers and turrets, now houses an elegant shopping centre.
The walk then reaches Torensluis on the Singel, the oldest surviving bridge in the city, built around 1648 on the site of a former lock and so wide that it feels like a small square. Beneath it are old cells once used as a lock-up. Close by, your guide points out one of the narrowest house fronts in Amsterdam, barely wider than its front door, and explains why houses were taxed by their width.
The UNESCO Canal Belt, Prinsengracht and Westerkerk
From the Singel the route heads into the Grachtengordel, the semicircular ring of canals laid out in the 17th century and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010. On foot you notice details a boat cannot show: the bell, step and neck gables, the hoisting beams used to lift furniture to upper floors, and the facades that lean slightly forward on purpose.
Along Prinsengracht the route reaches Westerkerk, completed in 1631, whose 85-metre tower is the tallest church tower in the old city and is topped with a blue crown. Its carillon still rings across the canals every quarter of an hour. Your guide explains how merchants built along these canals and how the area changed during the Second World War, when many of its residents were deported.
De Negen Straatjes, the Nine Streets
The Nine Streets are short lanes that cross the main canals of the western Canal Belt, linking the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht between Raadhuisstraat and Leidsegracht. In the 17th century they were busy with tanners, leather workers and small traders, and some street names still recall those crafts.
Today this is one of the most charming shopping areas in Amsterdam, with independent boutiques, vintage shops, design stores, cheese shops and cosy cafés in narrow canal houses. Every bridge offers a postcard view along the water. The walking tour passes through at an easy pace, and your guide suggests places to return to later for coffee, apple pie or a long browse.
Spui and the hidden courtyard of the Begijnhof
The tour ends around Spui, a lively square surrounded by bookshops and cafés, where a book market is held on Fridays. Just off the square, behind an unassuming door, lies the Begijnhof, a secluded courtyard founded in the 14th century for the Beguines, a community of unmarried religious women who lived together without taking vows.
Its neat houses surround a green lawn and a small church, and one of them, the wooden Het Houten Huys from around 1528, is among the oldest surviving houses in Amsterdam. The courtyard is still a residential place, so visitors are asked to keep quiet and keep to the paths; it is usually open during the day and entry is free. Is the Begijnhof worth visiting? Yes, for its calm alone.
