Full Description
Zaanse Schans windmill village
Your first stop is Zaanse Schans, about 30 minutes north of Amsterdam on the banks of the river Zaan. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries this was one of the first industrial regions in the world, with hundreds of windmills sawing timber for ships and grinding spices, mustard, oil and paint pigments. From 1961 historic wooden houses, workshops and mills from across the area were moved here to create the village you see today.
You have about two and a half hours to wander between green-painted houses with white gables, cross little bridges and photograph the row of mills along the dyke. Some mills still work, and you can step inside a few of them for a small fee paid on site. Is Zaanse Schans worth visiting? Yes, it is the easiest place near Amsterdam to see working windmills, and it is best enjoyed early before the busiest hours.
Clog workshop and cheese-making demonstration
The tour includes entry to the wooden-shoe workshop, where a craftsman shows how clogs were made. Blocks of poplar or willow are shaped on machines in a few minutes, a job that once took a full day by hand. Wooden shoes were the everyday footwear of farmers, fishermen and factory workers because they kept feet dry in the wet polder soil, and the shop displays decorated wedding clogs and traditional designs from different regions.
Next comes a cheese-making demonstration in a traditional dairy. You learn how milk becomes curd, how the wheels are pressed, salted in brine and left to mature, and why young cheese is mild while aged cheese becomes firm and crumbly. Samples of several cheeses are included, from creamy young varieties to those flavoured with herbs. Leave time for a Dutch pancake or a stroopwafel in the village, paid separately.
Keukenhof, the garden of spring
Keukenhof lies near Lisse in South Holland, about 45 minutes from Zaanse Schans. Its name means kitchen garden: in the fifteenth century the grounds supplied herbs to a nearby castle. The landscaped park was redesigned in the English style in the nineteenth century, and in 1949 local bulb growers turned it into a spring show garden. Each autumn gardeners plant millions of bulbs by hand across about 32 hectares.
From mid-March to mid-May the park is a sea of colour: tulips in every shade, hyacinths, daffodils and blossom trees around ponds, fountains and winding streams. Keukenhof opening hours are usually from 08:00 to 19:30 during the season. The best time to visit Keukenhof for tulips is mid to late April, while late March brings more crocuses and daffodils. Your Keukenhof tickets are included, so you walk straight in with your host.
Pavilions, the windmill and the bulb fields of Lisse
Inside the park, several pavilions host changing indoor flower shows, with orchids, lilies, roses and the most unusual tulip varieties displayed under glass, a good plan if the weather turns. Outdoors you find themed inspiration gardens, a sculpture park, a hedge maze and a playground with a petting area for younger children. Take the leaflet map to plan a loop and avoid missing the quieter corners.
In the north-west corner stands a wooden windmill from 1892. Climb its gallery for a view over the striped bulb fields of the surrounding flower region, where farmers grow tulips for export and the colours change week by week. Boats and small trains around the fields are optional extras on site. Most visitors spend three to four hours at Keukenhof; with the flexible return, you decide when to leave.
Flexible return to Amsterdam
Unlike many tours, this Keukenhof day trip from Amsterdam does not end at a fixed hour. Return coaches leave the garden every 30 minutes, so you can catch an earlier one if you are tired or stay until late afternoon when the light is softer and the crowds thin. Hosts at Keukenhof help you find the right coach, and the ride back takes about 45 minutes.
You arrive back at Overhoeksplein in Amsterdam Noord, where the check-in lounge has toilets and seating. From there, the free ferry crosses the IJ to Central Station in a few minutes. Wondering how to get to Keukenhof without the stress of combining trains and buses in peak season? This coach trip with a reserved seat and entry ticket is one of the simplest answers.
