Full Description
Rocha Conde de Óbidos and the Lisbon waterfront
The cruise starts from the Rocha Conde de Óbidos dock, on the river between the districts of Santos and Alcântara. Above it, on the hillside, a garden terrace looks over the docks, and nearby stands the National Museum of Ancient Art in a former palace. The quays here once handled the ships that connected Lisbon with its overseas ports, and today the area is lined with waterfront restaurants and marinas.
From the deck you quickly understand why Lisbon is called the city of seven hills: the old town rises in tiers above the water, its houses painted in ochre, pink and white. A Tagus river sunset boat tour is the gentlest way to see that skyline, and evening is the best moment for it, when the light turns warm and the river is calm.
Cais do Sodré, Ribeira das Naus and Praça do Comércio
Heading east, the boat passes Cais do Sodré, the riverside district where ferries cross to the south bank, and Ribeira das Naus, once the royal shipyard where many of the ships of the Age of Discoveries were built. Today it is a riverside promenade with wide steps running down into the water, a favourite place for locals to watch the sunset.
Next comes Praça do Comércio, the grand square that opens onto the river where the royal palace stood until the earthquake of 1755. From the water you see it as arriving sailors once did, framed by yellow arcades and the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch. Behind it the hillside of Alfama climbs towards the castle, with the cathedral towers among the rooftops.
Cristo Rei and the 25 de Abril Bridge
Turning west, the boat crosses towards the south bank, where the Cristo Rei monument stands on a high pedestal above Almada, its arms open towards the city. Inaugurated in 1959, the statue and its base together rise more than one hundred metres above the river, and the view from the water shows its full scale.
Then comes the moment many guests wait for: passing beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge. Opened in 1966, this red suspension bridge is more than two kilometres long, with cars on the upper deck and trains on the lower one since 1999. Its name recalls the date of the 1974 revolution. A Lisbon river cruise under the 25 de Abril Bridge at sunset, with the steel glowing in the low sun, is one of the great views of the city.
MAAT and the Tejo Power Station
Past the bridge, the riverbank changes character. The MAAT, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, opened in 2016 in a low, curving building covered in white ceramic tiles that seems to ripple like a wave. Its roof is a public walkway, often busy with people watching the sunset.
Right next to it stands the Tejo Power Station, a red-brick industrial building that supplied Lisbon with electricity for much of the twentieth century. Today it is a museum where you can walk among the old boilers and turbines. From the boat, the contrast between the industrial brick and the futuristic white curves is striking, especially when the evening light hits them.
Belém: the tower, the monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries
Belém is where Lisbon's age of ocean voyages began, and the boat brings you face to face with its symbols. The Monument to the Discoveries, shaped like the prow of a caravel, stands fifty-two metres tall on the riverbank, with carved figures climbing towards its point. Behind it, the long façade of the Jerónimos Monastery shows the ornate Manueline style, rich in carved ropes, shells and sea motifs.
Further west, Belém Tower was built in the early sixteenth century as a fortress guarding the river entrance. Together with the monastery it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Tagus river cruise to Belém at sunset shows the tower glowing against the water before the boat turns back towards the city, with the lights coming on along the shore.
