Full Description
Corralejo port, the gateway to Lobos
Corralejo grew from a fishing village at the northern tip of Fuerteventura into the island's liveliest resort, yet the harbour still has a working feel, with fishing boats moored beside the ferries to Lanzarote. The old quarter around the port is a maze of low white houses, small squares and seafood restaurants facing the water.
Your Lobos Island ferry from Corralejo leaves from this port. You check in at the quay, choose your return time slot based on availability and board the speedboat. How to get to Lobos Island? There is no bridge or airport, and private boats need permits, so a ticket from Corralejo is the simple answer. The port is a short walk from most hotels in town, with paid parking nearby for those driving from elsewhere on the island.
Lobos Island Natural Park
Lobos is a small volcanic islet of about 4.6 square kilometres, lying some two kilometres off the north coast of Fuerteventura across a narrow channel known as El Río. Its name comes from the Mediterranean monk seals, called sea wolves by sailors, that once lived on its shores until they disappeared in the early 20th century. Today the whole island is a protected natural park with no cars and no hotels.
The landscape is a mix of lava fields, small volcanic cones, salt marsh and sandy coves, with seabirds, lizards and hardy plants adapted to wind and salt. Is Lobos Island worth visiting? For anyone who wants a few hours of untouched nature, clear water and silence only 15 minutes from a busy resort, it is one of the best half-day escapes in the Canaries.
La Concha beach and snorkelling at Lobos
On the west side of the island, La Concha (also called La Calera) is a shell-shaped beach of pale sand wrapped around a shallow, sheltered lagoon. The water is calm and turquoise on most days, which makes it the favourite spot for families and for a relaxed swim. It is about 25 minutes on foot from the dock along a level path.
The rocky edges of Lobos are a marine reserve rich in fish, and snorkelling here reveals parrotfish, sea bream, small rays and starfish in water that is often clearer than on the main island. Snorkelling equipment is not included in this ticket, so bring your own mask or rent one in Corralejo before you sail. There is no shade on the beach, so a sun hat and plenty of water are essential.
The Caldera volcano and Martiño lighthouse
The highest point of Lobos is the Montaña de La Caldera, an old volcano 127 metres high whose crater has partly collapsed into the sea. A marked path leads up to the rim in about an hour from the dock, and the reward is a sweeping view over the whole island, the Corralejo dunes and, on a clear day, the volcanoes of Lanzarote.
At the northern tip stands the Martiño lighthouse, built in the 1860s and once the only inhabited outpost on the island. A circular trail of a few hours links the dock, the lighthouse, the Caldera and the beach, over gentle but stony ground. Things to do on Lobos Island depend on your energy: a full loop for walkers, or a short stroll and a long swim for everyone else.
El Puertito, the fishermen's village of Lobos
Near the dock, the hamlet of El Puertito is a cluster of simple fishermen's huts set around natural rock pools filled by the tide. The pools are shallow and calm, perfect for children to paddle and for spotting small fish and crabs, and the whitewashed walls against the blue water make it the most photographed corner of the island.
A small restaurant serves paella and fresh fish at your own expense; it gets busy at lunchtime, so many visitors bring snacks and water instead. The best time to visit Lobos Island is on the first morning departures, before the day's visitors arrive, and in spring or autumn when the walk is cooler. Access to the island is regulated to protect it, and our team tells you on WhatsApp if any extra registration is needed for your date.
