Full Description

Amadores and Puerto Rico, the sheltered south-west coast

The south-west coast of Gran Canaria, between Arguineguín and Mogán, is the sunniest and calmest stretch of the island's shoreline. Amadores Beach, a crescent of pale sand protected by breakwaters next to the resort of Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, is famous for its clear turquoise water, and the coves around it are a natural classroom for first-time divers.

The dive centre for this experience is based in this area, and the instructors pick the best dive site of the day according to swell and wind, so you always dive where the water is calm and visibility is good. If you have been searching for scuba diving at Amadores or diving in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria, this is the easiest way to try it with hotel pickup included.

Life under the surface in Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands sit in the Atlantic off Africa, where warm and cool currents meet, and the volcanic seabed around Gran Canaria supports a surprising mix of marine life. On a beginner dive you can see colourful parrotfish grazing on the rocks, slender trumpetfish, stingrays resting on the sand and silvery shoals of barracuda passing by.

The water is clear for most of the year, and its temperature changes gently with the seasons, from cooler in late winter to its warmest at the end of summer, so a full wetsuit is provided. Underwater, your instructor stays close, points out the animals and keeps a calm, steady pace so you can simply enjoy the view.

Your first dive, step by step

The experience starts on land with a fun, clear briefing: how the equipment works, how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise your ears and the basic hand signals. Then you gear up and walk into shallow water, where you practise a few simple skills while you can still stand. Only when you feel comfortable do you move on to the guided dive.

The dive itself lasts about an hour in the water, always at beginner depth and always with the instructor at your side. Groups are limited to 8 people, so everyone gets attention. A medical questionnaire must be completed before diving; if you have certain conditions, a doctor's permission is needed, which can be arranged on the island at least 24 hours before your dive.

Pickup towns on the south-west coast

Pickup and drop-off are included from Maspalomas, Arguineguín, Patalavaca, Puerto Rico, Platero, Taurito, Playa de Mogán and Puerto de Mogán. For the 09:00 dive, pickup is between 08:15 and 09:00, and the exact time is confirmed the day before. Guests staying outside the coastal towns between Playa del Inglés and Mogán need to make their own way to the meeting point.

With transfers, the whole experience takes about three hours, so you are back at your hotel before lunch. If you prefer to meet the team directly at the dive site, plan about two hours. Remember to wait at least 12 hours between a single dive and a flight, so this is best booked early in your holiday.
