Full Description
A guided buggy tour through the canyons of southern Gran Canaria
This buggy tour in Gran Canaria takes you away from the beach resorts and into the dry mountains behind them. A guide leads the convoy on tracks that ordinary cars cannot use, and you take the wheel of your own off-road buggy, with a passenger seat beside you.
The route is easy to enjoy even if you have never driven a buggy: the guide gives a clear briefing before the start, keeps the pace steady and stops to let the dust settle and the group regroup. It is a fun way to explore the island, with the wind, the sun and the landscape all around you.
The Ayagaures Valley and the Pedro Gonzalez viewpoint
The tour heads first towards the Ayagaures Valley, a wide gorge of rock, cactus and pine below the highlands of the south. At the Pedro Gonzalez viewpoint you park the buggies and look out over the valley, its reservoir and the surrounding mountains, in a scene that many guests photograph again and again.
From the viewpoint the unpaved road continues into smaller canyons, where the track narrows and the scenery changes from red rock to dry scrub. This is the heart of the Gran Canaria buggy adventure, and it gives a sense of how big and empty the island becomes just a short drive inland.
The Fataga area, reservoirs and mountain villages
Later the route explores the countryside near the Fataga Valley, famous for its palm groves and whitewashed villages, and passes reservoirs that hold water for the dry south. You see terraced fields, old farmhouses and viewpoints that look across many folds of mountain.
The stops are short but well chosen, and the guide shares details about the villages, plants and volcanic history. The exact route can change with track conditions, weather and group size, so treat the itinerary as a guide. Expect a mix of dusty stretches, small climbs and easy driving.
Morning or afternoon tour: who can drive and what to wear
There are two options. The morning tour lasts about 2.5 hours and collects guests from a wide list of resort areas; the shorter afternoon tour lasts about 2 hours and collects from the main areas around Maspalomas and Playa del Ingles only. Check the pickup list for your option in the booking panel.
The driver must be at least 18 and hold a valid car driving licence, which is mandatory; one licence per buggy is enough and you can take turns. Passengers must be at least 1.35 metres tall. Wear closed shoes and clothes you do not mind getting dusty; goggles are provided, and a face bandana can be bought at the shop.
