Full Description
Plaza Nueva and the river Darro
The walk begins in Plaza Nueva, one of the oldest squares in Granada, laid out over the river Darro when the river was vaulted over in the sixteenth century. On one side stands the Royal Chancery, a Renaissance courthouse, and at its end the little church of Santa Ana with its brick bell tower, built on the site of a former mosque. Above you the walls of the Alhambra rise on the wooded hill.
From here the guide leads you along the Carrera del Darro, a cobbled riverside street of stone bridges, old mansions and convents squeezed between the river and the Albaicín hill. It is one of the most beautiful streets in Spain for an evening stroll, and the guide explains how this valley linked the Alhambra palace city with the town where most people lived.
El Bañuelo, the old Arab bath
On the Carrera del Darro, behind a modest doorway, lies El Bañuelo, an eleventh-century Arab bath and one of the oldest public buildings left from Muslim Granada. Its rooms follow the classic sequence of cold, warm and hot halls, covered by brick vaults pierced with small star-shaped skylights that let in shafts of light.
Horseshoe arches rest on columns and capitals reused from earlier Roman and Visigothic buildings, a sign of how layers of history overlap in Granada. On this walking tour El Bañuelo is a short photo stop of about five minutes, enough to understand how bathing was part of daily life in al-Andalus. If you want to step inside, the building has its own opening hours and can be visited separately.
Albaicín walking tour: lanes, carmenes and cisterns
The Albaicín is the oldest quarter of Granada, a maze of steep cobbled lanes on the hill facing the Alhambra, listed by UNESCO alongside the palace. Its first fortress was built here long before the Alhambra existed, and the quarter kept its Moorish street plan: narrow alleys, small squares, old water cisterns and walled carmenes, traditional houses with hidden gardens of fig, lemon and cypress.
For about an hour the guide leads you uphill through this labyrinth, pointing out church towers built on former minarets, the old city gates and the cisterns that once supplied every neighbourhood. You hear how Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side here, and how the quarter changed after 1492. The climb is steady but the pace is relaxed, with stops to catch your breath and take photos.
Mirador de San Nicolás sunset view
The high point of the Albaicín is the Mirador de San Nicolás, the square in front of the church of San Nicolás that offers the most famous view in Granada: the whole length of the Alhambra on its hill, with the snowy peaks of the Sierra Nevada behind. In the late afternoon the red walls glow warm and golden, and the square fills with travellers, painters and local musicians.
Right beside the viewpoint is the Great Mosque of Granada, opened in 2003 as the first mosque built in the city for five centuries, whose garden also looks across to the Alhambra. The tour pauses here for a short break and photos. For the Mirador de San Nicolás sunset, spring and autumn evenings are ideal, when the air is clear and the light is soft.
Sacromonte, the cave quarter at dusk
From San Nicolás the walk continues to Sacromonte, the hill along the Darro valley where families dug cave dwellings into the soft earth from the sixteenth century. The quarter became the heart of Granada's Romani community and the birthplace of the zambra, a local style of flamenco performed inside the caves. Whitewashed cave fronts, prickly pears and steep paths give it the feel of a village within the city.
This Sacromonte walking tour leads you to hidden viewpoints that most visitors never find, where you look back at the Alhambra and the Generalife as the sun sets, about 35 minutes in total. The tour ends in this area as dusk falls; your guide shows you the easiest way back down to the centre on foot or by the small city bus.
